Dutchmen Down Falcons, 1-0 in Defensive Battle

Annville, PA - The No. 14 Messiah Falcons lost a defensive battle to the No. 15 Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Saturday evening in Annville. The Falcons could only muster five shots – four on goal – in the 1-0 shutout loss.

The first 10 minutes of the game the game was mostly played in the midfield with neither team recording a shot. Across the next four minutes, the Falcons had some of their best chances of the game, firing three of their five total shots and having two penalty corners. Even with these chances the Falcons could not capitalize and the score remained knotted at 0-0.

With the score still tied, 0-0, in the 26th minute the Dutchman had a flurry of chances of their own. In a three-minute stretch the Dutchmen shot four times before finally beating the Falcons' defense. After the Dutchmen were awarded a corner at the 28:06 mark, Lyndee Sheaffer took a pass from Lauren Brumbach and put a shot past the Falcons' defense and goalie, Carly Day, to put the Dutchmen up 1-0.

While, the Falcons trailed 1-0 at the half they looked for the equalizer early in the second half. In the first five minutes of the half, Carissa Gehman and Kristin Donohue both put shots on frame but both were turned away.

Unbeknownst to the Falcons, those shots would be their last of the game. The Dutchmen would control the final half hour of the contest and the Falcons would fall by the final score of 1-0.

Goalkeeper Carly Day made three saves and Moriah Pfautz led the Falcons with two shots, both on goal, in the loss.

The win moves Lebanon Valley to 11-1 and 3-0 in the conference. With the loss the Falcons fall to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference. While the Falcons have five losses on the season, all five losses have been one goal defeats to teams ranked in the Top 15.

The Falcons next take the field on Homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 18th at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Field when they take on Arcadia University.
