Messiah Men's Basketball All-Time Commonwealth Honors
Annville, PA – Messiah College seniors
Brad Bolen and
David Fernandez were both named All-Commonwealth for men's basketball on Friday, recognition for their stellar play on the hardwood this season. They were the only pair of teammates in the conference to both be named First Team.
Â
Brad Bolen led the Falcons with a career-high 20.9 points per game (ppg), good also for second in the conference. He also set career-best averages of 34.6 minutes per game, 4.9 rebounds per game, 3.2 assists per game, and 1.5 steals per game. A threat from behind the arc and slashing to the hoop he led the Falcons in scoring 16 times this and also shot a career-best 83.7 percent from the free-throw line on a team-high 147 attempts. The First Team honor is Bolen's second-straight following last season.
Â
David Fernandez's First Team nod is also the second of his career, though he returned from missing all of 2012-13 to play at a high level this season. He was second on the team with a 15.3 ppg average and set career-high's with 5.2 assists per game and 72.0 percent free-throw shooting.
Â
Both Bolen and Fernandez also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark this season. Bolen is tied for seventh all-time with Rich Sider '74 at 1,368 points and Fernandez is twentieth all-time at 1,056 points.
In both being named First Team they become only the second pair of Messiah teammates ever to receive First Team honors in the same season (Zach Wiernicki, Jared Yoder, 2006).
Â
Though the Falcons' chase of a Commonwealth title fell short, Messiah (19-6) did experience more than a few historic moments this season. Among them were the program-best 12-0 start and a ranking as high as No. 15 in the
D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll.
Â
Alvernia's Brian Parker was named the Commonwealth's Player of the Year, while Gary Stewart of Stevenson was named Coach of the Year.
