Stutzman Named Capital One Academic All-American

6/24/2014 12:30:00 PM

Greenwood, IN – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) honored Messiah College thrower Trevor Stutzman on Tuesday, naming him a Capital One Academic All-American for the men's track & field. The honor makes Stutzman the Falcons' first-ever male track & field student-athlete to earn All-American distinction.

Each year, CoSIDA elects Academic All-District members across NCAA Division I, II, III, and "College Division."  The College Division is comprised of NAIA, two-year, and Canadian student-athletes. Student-athletes are nominated by current CoSIDA members—usually an institution's Sports Information Director— and must carry at least 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA). Nominated student-athletes must also be of sophomore athletic eligibility and be significant contributors to the success of their team.

Those selected as First Team Academic All-District are eligible for the All-American team. Since 2011, Capital One has sponsored both the All-District and All-American awards.

A junior Nutrition & Dietetics major, Stutzman carries a 3.68 cumulative GPA. This year he was a two-time All-American in the Shot Put and three-time MAC Champion in the Shot Put and Discus.

Stutzman placed eighth in the Indoor season before finishing fifth in the spring. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the Outdoor Discus, but failed to place. Nevertheless, he also dominated the conference competition, winning the Indoor Shot Put and both the Outdoor Shot Put and Discus.

Stutzman's Capital One award is for Third Team.
