Grantham, PA - Lightning and rainfall proved the ultimate foe to both No. 1 Messiah College and Elizabethtown College on Tuesday night, as their game was called in the 58th minute. The Falcons were leading 1-0 at the time.
Due the game falling short of the 70-minute mark, it will be considered a "no contest" and will not be made up. The Falcons' 1-0 lead was earned in the 17th minute when
Jack Thompson weaved through a pair of the defenders on the left side to get into the box. He quickly put a short pass through to
Danny Brandt 10 yards off the post for a shot past keeper Justin Signora. The goal set off a barrage of marshmallows from the more-than 2,000 fans in attendance, a tradition in the rivalry game named the "Marshmallow Bowl."
Despite the lead, however, flashes of lightning caused the game to be delayed just after 8:00 p.m. The teams and fans waited in a delay for more than an hour before it became apparent that the lightning and rainfall would keep the teams from resuming play.
As mentioned, the game will not be made up. Initial discussions suggested the teams could start up again on Wednesday, but the final decision was made for no make-up to be scheduled.
The Falcons will next play this Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host Widener University on Shoemaker Field at 7:30 p.m.
