Messiah Softball All-Time Conference HonorsAnnville, PA – From the beginning of the season until now, Messiah College softball has led the Commonwealth Conference; today, they l
ed the All-Commonwealth honors with nine selections.
Claressa Mees (Pitcher of the Year),
Carrie Fix (Rookie of the Year), and
Amy Weaver (Coach of the Year) all received special recognition, while four players landed on the First Team.
Â
Mees was elected to the First Team, as was center fielder
Courtney Allen, shortstop
Amanda Jones, and catcher
Becky Notte. Fix was named to the Second Team with two teammates: third baseman
Brooke Pompeo and right fielder
Nicole Blantz. Infielder
Katie Tankred was also named Honorable Mention.
Â
The First Team honor for Mees is the second-consecutive of her career, and the Pitcher of the Year honor is a first. She led the Commonwealth with 15 wins and was tied for second with five shutouts (5). She was sixth overall in both innings pitched (107.2) and ERA (1.95), though she was third in ERA for all pitchers that were over 100 innings. Batters have hit just .240 against her this season, the seventh-best mark in all of the conference.
Â
This week, Mees put an exclamation point on her PiOY candidacy with a no-hitter against Albright in a 1-0 win.
Â
Courtney Allen's First Team honor is the second-straight of her career. She was second on the team with a .392 batting average, and first on the team with 37 RBI. She was third on the team in runs (33), total bases (76), and slugging (.633). Allen led the Commonwealth in RBI and was fourth in runs, hits, triples, total bases, and slugging. Allen was also a force for the Falcons on the mound as she collected a 7-0 record and a 1.77 ERA against 55.1 innings pitched. Her batting average against of .201 led the conference.
Â
Amanda Jones' First Team honor is the first of her career following a Second Team nod last season. Despite her terrific play last year, 2015 was a bit of a breakout season for the dynamic shortstop. She hit a team-leading seven triples and was second on the team in doubles (13), home runs (4), RBI (32), total bases (85), and slugging (.720). She was also third on the team in average (.390), and she was in the top five in the Commonwealth in runs (second), hits (fifth), doubles (third), triples (first), home runs (t-third), RBI (second), total bases (third), and slugging (third).
Â
Becky Notte's All-Commonwealth honor is the third of her career, and her First Team election mirrors last season. She had an incredible .994 fielding percentage as the Falcons' backstop, and she was fourth on the team in batting average (.379), second in doubles (13), and third in RBI (30). Not only did she lead Commonwealth catchers in almost every offensive category, she was fourth overall in doubles and RBI, and sixth in total bases. Notte also threw out 33.3 percent of would-be base stealers.
Â
Carrie Fix's ROY honor is the fifth in program history, and first since Steph Schell won the award in 2010. Fix's numbers are flat-out eye popping for a first-year player, as she led the Commonwealth in runs (37) and doubles (17), and was second in hits (50), triples (5), total bases (92), and slugging (.742). She was also tied for second in the conference with five home runs and led Messiah with a .449 on-base percentage (OBP; minimum 25 at-bats).
Â
Brooke Pompeo and
Nicole Blantz joined Fix on the Second Team. Pompeo's All-Commonwealth honor is her third in as many seasons following a First Team honor last season and an Honorable Mention nod in her rookie campaign. She hit .333 with 23 runs and 12 RBI. She collected a .358 on-base percentage (OBP) as the Falcons' leadoff hitter, and impressively did not strike out once this season.
Â
Blantz's honor is her first since being named Honorable Mention in 2013. She hit .362 with nine doubles and 21 RBI. She also collected a .412 OBP and a .975 fielding percentage.
Â
Katie Tankred picked up an Honorable Mention nod for the second-straight season, a demonstration of the Falcons' depth considering Tankred was fifth on the team with a .368 batting average. She had a .421 OBP and collected 18 RBI.
Â
Amy Weaver's COY honor is the fifth of her career and first since Messiah's Division III National Championship season in 2009. The Falcons sit at 30-7 entering this weekend's conference tournament, their most wins since collecting 35 in 2012. This year the Falcons are leading the Commonwealth in runs (242), hits (348), doubles (81), triples (17), RBI (212), total bases (514), slugging (.512), OBP (.400), and fielding (.962).
Â
As mentioned, Messiah will enter this weekend's Commonwealth Tournament as the No. 1 seed. Fans are encouraged to follow GoMessiah.com for a soon-to-be-released full preview of the tourney.
