Louisville, KY - Running alone for the first time all season, Messiah College sophomore
Benjamin Schott performed impressively at the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday. Schott finished in a time of 25:19.1, good enough for 80th overall out of 280 individuals.
"Ben ran another great race today," Messiah head coach Dale Fogelsanser said. "He was patient and displayed great composure in his first NCAA race."
Schott of a good start, and he was at the back-end of the front pack for the first half of the race. At the two-kilometer mark he was in 99th place (6:12.1), and he steadily improved from there until the finish. Altogether he averaged 5:05.5 per mile.
"It was a very even race," Fogelsanger said. "Ben had a great finish and did a lot of work at the end to improve his finish."
Ian LeMere of Wisconsin-Platteville won the National Title with a time of 1:39.1, and fellow MAC runner Ernie Pitone of Widener finished as the National Runner-Up; Pitone beat out Tim Nichols of Tufts by just seven hundredths of a second.
North Central (IL) literally ran away with the team title, as their top five finishers placed ninth, 15th, 18th, 19th, and 24th, respectively, for a total of 60 points. That was 144 points ahead of second-place SUNY Geneseo.
