Grantham, PA – Messiah men's soccer is off to a strong start for the 2016 season. The Falcons are currently 3-0-1 and won two games this past weekend against Olgethorpe University and Oswego State University at home on Shoemaker Field. Junior forward Colby Thomas helps lead the Falcon attack and has scored two goals, recorded two assists, and tallied six points thus far this season. (Don't miss Colby's goal from Saturday that was featured as the Highlight of the Night!)

We got together with Colby to hear more about his Messiah College experience in this edition of #WhyMessiah.

What are the names of the rest of your family and where do you fall among your siblings?
My parents are Roger and Robin Thomas. I have an older brother Dylan so I am the youngest.

Is there anything unique about your family or members of your family that you want to share?
My brother is a professional snowboarder.

What is your favorite activity or hobby other than your sport?
Playing board games, disc golf, and hiking.

Why did you come to Messiah and/or why do you love being at Messiah?
My first visit to Messiah was very different from my other college visits. The guys on the team invested in my life. When I finally arrived on campus for my first year I truly realized how much the coaches, players, and alumni genuinely cared about me and wanted a genuine relationship with me.

Why did you choose your specific major here at Messiah? Have you enjoyed your study in it?
I chose early and special education because of my passion for youth and people with special needs. In high school I had teachers who changed the course of my life for the better. I am excited for the opportunity to have a positive impact in many children's lives. I have enjoyed my study in my major because of how much experience Messiah provides us. We are required to do observation hours, which in the end will prepare me to be a better teacher.

Who is your favorite professor and why?
Professor Bleiler and Dr. Fischer. They were both very enthusiastic about teaching and helped me realize how much of an impact I can have on the younger generation through my teaching.

Who has most influenced your life and why?
My parents' love and sacrifice has truly impacted my life. It is easy for me to say that I would not be where I am today without them. My brother has also impacted my life by teaching me to always chase my dreams regardless of what others think.

What is one thing about your coach that those outside your team may not know?
He can quote every single line from the movie Nacho Libre.

What is special about your coaching staff and teammates, and how would you explain to a recruit or someone outside of the program?
Being a part of Messiah men's soccer is not just a four-year thing. While you are here you create relationships that last a lifetime. I believe that this is a direct product of both the coaches' and players' willingness to invest in each other's lives. Here at Messiah I have a group of men who care about my relationship with Christ, my future dreams, and many bigger-picture things.

What is one of your favorite team traditions and why?
At the end of each preseason we go over to Coach McCarty's house and play different yard games, we call it Backyard Olympics.

Do you have a pre-game ritual or habit? If so, what is it?
I have to listen to my pre-game music playlist.
- Jon Bellion
- Kings Kaleidoscope
- United Pursuit
- Josh Garrels
- Mat Kearney

What is the toughest part of being a collegiate student-athlete? How do you live or grow through this at Messiah?
Finding the balance between school, athletics, and social time. Time management is crucial to making sure everything gets done on time.

What is your favorite Messiah memory?
My favorite Messiah memory is late night Sheetz runs with the boys.

If you had to answer the question #WhyMessiah what would you say?
It's not just a four-year experience. These people will be my best friends for the rest of my life, and they have influenced my life in incredible ways.
