LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – No. 14 Messiah wrestling took part in the inaugural Bald Eagle Duals today, and they dropped two different matches– in opposing fashion– to two different opponents of higher NCAA divisions. Host Division 1 Lock Haven ran away from Messiah 34-6, and NCAA Division II Wheeling Jesuit edged the Falcons by a single point by way of a major decision in the final bout.
The decisions moved the Falcons to 4-4 on the season.
Against host Lock Haven– who entered the weekend ranked No. 17 in Division I– No. 10
Hunter Harris (133) fought off a late effort by DJ Fehlman to win 12-11, but the Bald Eagles won seven of the first eight bouts to build a 31-6 lead. No. 4
Kyle Koser also earned a one-point decision (5-4) over Tristan Sponseller at 197.
Messiah's attempt to split today's duals started well when, against Wheeling Jesuit,
Hunter Harris collected his 13th pin of the season to put the Falcons up 12-0. Two bouts later
Stephen Maloney (149) earned a major decision over Daniel Romero to give Messiah their largest lead of the afternoon, 16-3.
But Wheeling then turned a 13-point deficit into a five-point lead with three-straight wins by tech fall, pin, and tech fall.
No. 7
Derek Beitz (184) and No. 4
Kyle Koser (197) put Messiah back up with back-to-back decisions, but Terrance Fanning came up with a match-clinching 13-5 major decision at heavyweight to give the Cardinals a 23-22 win.
Messiah will now be off until the end of the month when they return to Lock Haven to compete in the annual Lock Haven Invitational.
