Joan Chamberlain was a trailblazer for women's volleyball and women's athletics during her time at Messiah. In 1977, Chamberlain became the first head coach of the women's volleyball team and led the program for the next 19 years, accumulating an overall record of 319-279 and leading the Falcons to their only two berths in the NCAA Tournament, to date, in 1983 and '85.
In addition to her legacy on the sidelines, Chamberlain served on the NCAA women's volleyball regional ranking committee for several years and was a forerunner of women's athletics at Messiah, the eastern conference of the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) and the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women).
