Mike Shaker – Men’s Basketball (1970-1988)

Mike Shaker arrived at Messiah College in 1970 to begin an 18-year career as the Falcons’ men’s basketball coach. He won over 250 games with Messiah, coaching 12 members of the 1,000-point club and six members of the 500-rebound club. He led Messiah to the District II finals of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in both 1973 and 1979, finishing as District II Champion in 1979. He was also named NCCAA National Coach of the Year in 1973. Coach Shaker’s teams won more than a dozen seasonal tournaments over his tenure, including the inaugural Carlisle Kiwanis Tournament and six of the King’s College Tournaments. Throughout his years at Messiah he was considered an innovator of the game of basketball. The founder of the Falcon Basketball Camps in 1972, he was also admired as a great motivator and highly effective communicator, and is well-regarded for strengthening the foundation of competitive, successful athletics that still exists today for the Falcons.
