York, PA - Two nationally ranked teams battled each other to the end on Friday night with York College coming out on top, 22-19. A technical fall at 197 lbs. and a decision at 285 lbs., secured them the victory.
The York College Spartans came out strong at home against the Falcons. They secured the first two wins in the 125 lb. and 133 lb. weight classes against sophomore
Kurt Rodriguez and freshman
Zach Snow, respectively.
At one point in the match the Falcons were down 13-4. However, the team followed that with four wins of their own, the first of which by technical fall worth six points. That match occurred in the 157 lb. weight class; senior
Josh Bressler defeated Adam Kritzer at 5:40.
The next three match wins came from sophomore
Jake English at 165 lbs., junior
Ricardo Plummer at 174 lbs., and freshman
Josh Thomson at 184 lbs. After Thomson's match, and a 15-0 run for the Falcons, they led the match 19-13.
The Spartans, though, would not succumb to the fight that Messiah was giving them. At 197 lbs. Kyle Minogue managed to win by technical fall against senior
Travis Ebersole. That result knotted the match at 19 going into the final bout between junior
Charles Jones and Mike Spencer at heavyweight (285 lbs.).
“Going into the last two matches we only needed to win one of them to take the dual,” said head coach
Bryan Brunk. “We just made some mental mistakes that cost us in the end.”
Although Jones was up in the match he could not finish it out on top. Spencer got the win by decision, 5-2, and gave York the overall win in the dual.
“I was really proud of our guys heart and their effort,” coach Brunk said after the match. “York battled hard, it was a really exciting dual meet.”
The Falcons now take their winter break and will return to the mats on January 5 for the North-South Duals in Collegeville, Pa.
