The Falcons began the year strong as they competed Friday at the Susquehanna Indoor Orange & Maroon Classic at Susquehanna University. Several athletes performed extremely well in their events, many of whom reached qualifying times for the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championship.
Among the highlights of the day was an incredible throw by sophomore Fred Fulton in the men's shot put event. Fulton's throw was an indoor personal best of 16.81m (55' 2.0”) which won him first place in the event. Sophomore Trevor Stutzman also had an excellent performance, placing second with a throw of 15.81m (51' 10.5”).
Both Fulton and Stutzman also threw well in the weight throw event, placing second and fifth respectively.
In addition to the throwing events, the Falcons saw some strong performances in the distance events. Several Messiah women competed in the one mile race, nearly all of them running MAC qualifying times.
Freshmen
Jacquelyn Young and
Victoria Scrima placed third and fourth overall, with respective times of 5:41.99 and 5:47.34. Sophomore
Leah Novak raced well in her heat for the one mile race, finishing first with a personal best of 5:54.17. Junior
Kaylene Mason also raced well in her heat, placing third with a personal best of 6:01.31.
Several Messiah athletes competed in the men's one mile race, most of them hitting MAC qualifying times. Freshman
John Ausel placed third overall with an indoor personal best time of 4:31.17, while senior
Aaron Reynolds finished sixth at 4:33.16.
In addition to the one mile race, many of these athletes competed in the 800 meter run and ran qualifying times. Senior
Aaron Reynolds finished third overall for the men with a time of 2:01.26.
Junior
Liz Martin had several impressive performances Friday, including a first place finish in the women's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.4 seconds. Martin also grabbed first in the open 60 meter dash, finishing at 8.12 seconds.
Sophomore
Nicholas White also performed well in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing fourth in finals at 8.67 seconds.
Classmate
Alex Yoder had a good performance in the men's 200 meter dash grabbing second place with a time of 23.38.
Friday's meet was an excellent way to start 2013 for the Falcons, as many athletes took high finishing places as well as hitting qualifying times for MAC's. The team greatly looks forward to the rest of the season as they continue to prepare for the indoor conference championships. Their next invitational is set for January 25-26 at Bucknell University.
