Falcons Start Season Against Bullets, Crusaders

Gettysburg, PA - Messiah College swimming started off the new seasons at Gettysburg College on Saturday. The men lost to Gettysburg 200-48 and Susquehanna 191-61. The women lost to Gettysburg 163-70 and narrowly were defeated by Susquehanna 123-110.

The women opened up their season with an impressive display of balanced strength across returners and newcomers. Emily Reale broke a College record on her first day of competition, setting a new time of 11:05.15 in the 1000 freestyle. Reale also impressed in the 100 breastroke as she placed third on the day with a time of 1:11.92—less than a second behind the College record of 1:11.09.
 
Reale also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.77. Caitlin Magaw took fourth in the same event at 2:21.76.
 
Reale's classmate-and-fellow-newcomer Tara Freeman took first in the 50 freestyle (25.10), though she fell just short of the College record held by teammate Hanna Schaffer (25.04). Schaffer took third in the event with a time of 25.67.  The duo also did well in the 100 freestyle, with Freeman second (55.53) and Schaffer fourth (56.99).
 
Caitlin Magaw had a strong day in 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke events, finishing third (1:02.70) and fourth (2:16.26), respectively. Katie Reiter (2:20.08) and Laura Penwell (2:21.58) finished seventh and eighth behind Magaw in the 200. 
 
Penwell stood out especially in the 100 butterfly, finishing third overall with a time of 1:03.73. Freeman followed in fifth place at 1:04.07.
 
Other highlights for the Falcons included Lauren Clune's fourth-place finish (5:38.28) in the 500 freestyle and the runner-up finish by Anna McArdle, Emily Reale, Tara Freeman, and Hannah Schaffer in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.79).
 
On the men's side, newcomer Chad Alshouse had a solid day for Messiah. He finished fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.21 and then took a seventh-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.68. Both times are good for top-six marks in program history.
 
Alshouse also joined Nick Wieder, Daniel Jessen, and Nate Brown for a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
 
Brown finished in second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.13, while Wieder took fifth in the 100 butterfly at 55.89. Wieder also took fourth in the 1000 freestyle at 10:43.43.
 
Aaron Eckman also placed well, finishing fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:11.82) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:54.22).
 
Both the men and the women return to action on Nov. 9 when they swim at home for the first time. They'll host Widener, Hood, and Fairleigh-Dickinson in a quad meet set for 1:00 p.m.
