Reading, PA - Messiah College men's and women's swimming each battled hard at Albright College on Saturday, with the men falling 158-104 and the women losing narrowly 142.5-119.5.

The Falcons started off the meet with the women just missing out on first place in the 200-yard medley by less than half of a second (1:53.21). Tara Freeman edged out Tricia Janowiak in the final leg but it wasn't enough to make up the difference.

Messiah later made up some points in the 100, and 200-yard backstroke, taking first and second place in both events. Caitlin Magaw finished in first place (1:02.68), followed closely by Laura Penwell (1:02.85) in second for the 100. In the 200, Magaw (2:16.48) finished three seconds ahead of teammate Katie Reiter (2:19.53).

That win was soon followed by two Falcons' wins in the 50, and 100-yard freestyle by Freeman (24.85, 54.48). She out-touched Albright's Codi Herr to the wall by one tenth of a second in the 100 and set a new school record at the same time.

The women later finished off the day with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.40) but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lions' eight victories.

The Albright men proved to be talented in their home pool, taking wins in 10 total events. Messiah took their first win of the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke when Daniel Wingert overcame Ken Richardson by one tenth of a second (1:03.41). Wingert also won later

Nick Wieder won two events later in the 200-yard butterfly by a healthy, four-second margin (2:02.34) while setting a school record in the race by about the same margin. Classmate Chad Alshouse also took third place in that event (2:08.61).

Nate Brown came extremely close in the 50-yard freestyle, taking second place by just seven-hundredths of a second (22.06). Brown came even closer to finishing one place higher when he came in third in the 100-yard freestyle; Alex Bauer out-touched him by four-hundredths of a second (50.83).

Like the women, the men finished off the day with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:27.51.

Both the men and women will look to improve upon the results when they take on Dickinson College after almost a three-week break on Dec. 3 in Fredericksen Natatorium.
