Annville, PA – The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) released on Wednesday the recipients of the 2013 Fall Scholar-Athlete awards, with Messiah soccer players
Alicia Frey and
Joshua Wood listed among the award winners.
The Scholar-Athlete award is given to a senior in each men's and women's sport of each sport season. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.20 (4.0 scale). Historically, recipients hold GPA's north of 3.50 and are regarded as academic leaders in their respective sport.
The MAC Awards Committee bases selection of recipients on an even balance (50-50) of both academic and athletic prowess.
Both Frey and Wood completed their Messiah careers this Fall and are widely considered among the best players in Division III women's and men's soccer. Frey earned both her second
NSCAA All-American and
All-Region awards this season and has been a four-time All-Commonwealth performer. She was also
named the Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Year this season.
In Frey's four seasons the Falcons accumulated a record of 91-5-3 winning four conference titles and two NCAA Division III National Championships (2011, 2012). She finished her career with 33 goals and 18 assists.
In the classroom Frey majors in Mathematics and Secondary Education and carries a 3.73 cumulative GPA. This year she earned her
second-straight Capital One Academic All-District award and an
election to the Third Team All-American team. She is just the
second Messiah student-athlete ever to earn two Capital One Academic All-American honors.
On the men's side, Wood played a pivotal role in helping the program to their
10th NCAA Division III National Championship earlier this month. He led the team in goals (21) and points (49) this season and was recently
named the National player of the Year. In his career he's also
earned two All-Region and
three All-Commonwealth selections.
He finished his career with 51 goals, 22 assists, and 124 points, with both his goals and points totals good for 10th all-time in Messiah men's soccer history. A medical hardship waiver in 2010 allowed Wood to compete for five seasons with the Falcons, a span which included four National Championships and a 112-4-4 overall record.
Like Frey, Wood also earned a second-straight Capital One Academic All-District award this season before being
named a First Team All-American. In the classroom he is a Cross Cultural Ministries major with a 3.71 cumulative GPA.
