Collegeville, PA – The Falcons kicked off their season strong as the men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Bow-Tie Track Classic hosted by Ursinus College.
"It was a good opening meet," said Messiah's distance coach, Brian Hager. "We had several indoor personal records, a couple of MAC qualifying times and it as a great first experience for incoming freshman."
Among the best highlights of the day was a first place finish by Trevor Stutzman in the men's shot put. Stutzman threw a new indoor personal best of 16.10m (52' 10.00") securing the first place spot on his initial throw.
Messiah's men's distance runners also had a good day. Nathan Fleming ran an indoor personal best of 16:36.52, only six seconds off the MAC qualifying time.
In the one mile race, Joshua Pardoe ran an excellent race finishing twelfth overall Pardoe's time of 4:42.11 was not only an indoor personal record, but also within MAC qualifying time. Phil Headland finished just behind Pardoe in thirteenth also running an indoor mile personal best and MAC qualifying time of 4:43.69.
In the men's 800 meter run, Jonphilip McGill ran extremely well. McGill finished third overall, with an indoor personal best of 2:01.76, also a MAC qualifying time.
In other news, Ersikha Eugene shined for the women's team, racing a personal best and MAC qualifying time of 8.58 seconds. Kaitlyn Hostetler also raced in the 60 meter dash, finishing her first college race in 8.74 seconds.
Messiah's Tiffany Burrows ran very well in the women's 400 meter dash, running an indoor personal best of 1:03.49, allowing her to place seventh overall in the event.
In the men's 60 meter dash Tim Minnick also ran a personal best and MAC qualifying time of 7.51 seconds.
Josiah Haws and Brady Miller ran well in the men's 200 meter dash, both winning their respective heats and placing eleventh and twelfth overall. Haws finished in 24.50 seconds, while Brady completed his first ever 200 meter dash in 24.51 seconds.
The Falcons will continue training over the upcoming Christmas break and will return to action on January 17 2014 at the Susquehanna Invitational.
