Shippensburg, PA - The Falcons finished their regular season meets this weekend with a number of significant performances at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University.
Fred Fulton and
Trevor Stutzman showed their skill once again in the men's throwing events. Fulton placed first in the men's hammer with an outstanding throw of 55.49 meters, breaking Messiah's school record for the hammer which he set earlier this year. Fulton also placed third in the discus with a personal best throw of 47.64 meters. For his part, Stutzman claimed first in the men's discus at 48.21 meters and second in the men's shot put with a throw of 15.51 meters.
Another significant highlight of the weekend was
Rachel Robison's performance in the women's pole vault. Robison achieved a season best height of 3.31m, which landed her in fourth place.
Among the other highlights of the day, were the men's and women's 800 meter run. Four Messiah women raced season bests in the open 800, including
Jacquelyn Young (2:26.79),
Nicole Sunderland (2:29.18),
Victoria Scrima (2:30.38) and
Natasha Henderson (2:38.16). Henderson's time also qualified her for MAC's.
On the men's side, five Messiah athletes ran life-time personal records in the 800 meter run. Jonphillip McGill placed second in his heat, racing a time of 1:56.47, which landed him on Messiah's top ten list.
Trevor Praetsch also placed second in his heat, finishing at 1:58.32.
Edward Bley and
Cameron Shirk also had personal records (2:05.94, 1:59:28) and
Abram Albert ran a personal record and MAC qualifying time 2:04.14.
Messiah's men and women also performed well in the 1500 meter race.
Victoria Hepp raced a season best time of 5:22.85, while
Tasha Becker ran a personal best of 5:07.25.
Jessica Dillner had an outstanding kick for her last 300 meters, bringing her to a finishing time of 5:31.66, which allowed her to qualify for MAC's. Dillner's time was a great accomplishment for her, since she has been fighting through a significant injury this entire season, with the hope of qualifying for MAC's.
The men's team also performed well in the 1500 meter race. Tyler Sensing ran a personal best time of 4:11.72, well below MAC qualifying time, while
Nathan Fleming also qualified with a life time personal best time of 4:13.36.
Across the track,
Liz Martin and
Alex Yoder performed well in their respective events. Martin placed second in the women's 100 meter dash at 12.4 seconds, while Yoder also claimed a second place spot in the 400 meter dash at 48.7 seconds.
Rachel Bjorkman had a good day in the triple jump, placing seventh out of twenty-five competitors at 10.54m.
Nicolas White also had a seventh place finish in the men's 110 hurdles, running a time of 15.49 seconds.
This weekend's events were also significant for three of Messiah's seniors including
Murray Beachtel, and team captains Derrik Brown and
Andrew Ausel. Beachtel ran his last collegiate 5,000 meter run today, while Brown ran the men's 400 meter intermediate hurdles for the final time of his college career. As for Ausel, he finished his senior season on a strong note, racing a life-time personal best in the 400 meter dash of 57.23 seconds.
The Paul Kaiser Classic was the last of the Falcon's regular season meets. As has been the team's pattern at every meet, this weekend's competition was full of many personal achievements for some athletes, some of which placed athletes in Messiah's record book. With this weekend's activities behind them, the team will now set its eyes on the MAC Championship coming up on May 2-4.
