XML Box Score Oneonta, NY – Messiah College finished a two-game sweep of the Mayor's Cup Tournament on Oneonta State on Friday thanks to shutout of Claremont-Mudd-Scipps by way of a trio of goals from three different underclassmen. The win moved No. 1 Messiah to 4-0 on the season, while the Stags fell to 1-2.
Danny Brandt netted his second game of the year in the 39th minute of the game on a one-timer in the box from
Carter Robbins and
Bryant Myer. The score was Brandt's second on the season and proved to be the game-winner as the Falcons earned their second shutout in four games.
Bryant Myer extended the Falcons' lead in the 67th minute off an assist from
Nathan Eagan. Myer's quick turn after receiving the pass led to a quick shot that could not be stopped by keeper Daniel Roberts. The goal was Myer's first on the season, and was soon followed by the first career goal of
Robby Johnson. His tally came off a direct kick feed from
Carter Robbins as the Falcons caught the Stags' defense off guard.
The Falcons' allowed just three total shots to the defending SCIAC Champions, with
Brandon West collecting a single save in almost 82 minutes of action. Roberts and backup keeper Joseph Mondello gathered six saves against the Falcons' 13 total shots.
Joshua Wood, who collected Friday's game-winner in overtime, was named to the Mayor's Cup All-Tournament team along with defenders
Carter Robbins and
Josh Kremers.
The Falcons will take their undefeated record into next week where they will host Gettysburg College on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The game will be a rematch of Messiah's 3-1 win over the Bullets last season.
