Collegeville, PA – A small group of the Messiah track and field team took their talents to Ursinus College for a meet solely devoted to the pentathlon. The indoor pentathlon includes the 60 meter hurdles, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump, and the 1000 meters for the men and 800 meters for the women. At the conference championships, the men will add the pole vault and 60 meter dash to make a heptathlon.

On the men's side, senior Andrew Ausel broke 5 meters (16'5") in the long jump. He also ran 12.2 seconds in the 60 hurdles and 3:03 in the 1000. He is excited to hone his skills over the next few meets, and MAC qualification is within reach.

Dane Cornelius experienced his first multi event, and performed well across the board. He laid down a 10.8 in the 60 hurdles, a 3:08 in the 1000, and threw 8.8 meters (28'10.5") in the shot put.

Tim Hampton added a .8 meter (3') to his personal record in the shotput and performed well on the track and in the sand pit as well. He looks forward to going for the 3000 point qualification standard for the MAC heptathlon once the Falcons have the opportunity to run a full multi.

The pentathlon, for the women, is the full amount of events in their iteration of the MAC multi. Thus, they made good use of their first opportunity to get a feel for the event this season. For three Falcon women, it was their first ever pentathlon.

Rebecca Querfield set a new personal record in the 60 hurdles and was consistent in her 800, high jump and shot put. She also improved in the long jump.

Brooke Maneval exceeded expectations in the shot put and 800 and had good performances in the 60 hurdles and high jump.

Sophomore Andrea Fogelsanger debuted for Messiah track with some solid starting times and numbers. She was pleased with her accomplishments and is eager for the rest of the season.

Alyssa Mills, on the recovery path from an injury, solidified some encouraging marks and hopes to improve as she keeps healing. Last year, Mills competed at MACs, and she hopes to return.

"It is very exciting having four men and women working together in the multi events this season for Messiah," Messiah head coach Dale Fogelsanger said, impressed with the meet. "Ursinus was an especially great experience for the four first-time pentathletes. I'm confident that the learning curve will be steep in many events for each of them. The upper class pentathletes provided great leadership for the first-timers with warmup, emotion, and technical aspects. The multi provides great opportunity for community for athletes from different schools. In fact, we went out to eat with the group from Dickinson College after the event."

A larger group of Messiah's team will be participating in the Bison Classic at Bucknell University this Friday and Saturday.
