Grantham, PA - The No. 3 Messiah Falcons shut out the Elizabethtown Blue Jays tonight 49-0 with three pins in the first four bouts and five pins overall on the evening. The win brings Messiah's overall record this season to 19-2, while Elizabethtown drops to 3-9 on the year.
Â
A couple of rematches from earlier in the season played out in the dual between the Falcons and Blue Jays, the first of which coming between
Lucas Malmberg (125) and Kyle McNulty. They had previously met in the MAC Championship where Malmberg defeated McNulty with a pin the first period. McNulty avoided that result for a second time but Malmberg came out swinging and won with a 19-6 major decision.
Â
The second rematch came between No. 6
Josh Thomson (184) and Luke Fernandez; Thomson also previously won with a pin in the first period at the MAC Championship. Fernandez was able to disrupt Thomson's rhythm in the match but not enough to keep him from scoring points. The match ended in Thomson's favor with an 8-1 decision.
Â
Kyle Dayhoff (165) also came away with an 8-1 decision for the Falcons. Dayhoff defeated Zeke Zimmer, controlling the pace of the match well. In the first period, Dayhoff nearly got himself a defensive pen from an awkward position but Zimmer was able to find his way out of it.
Â
Kyle Coblentz (133) secured the first pin of the match for the Falcons by defeating Ryan Harter in the second period. Coblentz had to ride out the position he was in for about 20 seconds before the ref called in but he held on and put the Falcons up 10-0 at that point.
Â
Putting the Falcons up 16-0 in the match was No. 1
Kaleb Loht (141) with his pin on Michael Henning at 2:04 in the first period. Following right up after Loht was
Greg Kabakjian (149) with another pin, this time at 6:13 during the third period.
Â
Later on,
Ben Kramer (197) was able to get another pin in the third period (5:45), while working on Ben Martin. Finishing off the night was
Charles Jones, collecting the fifth and final pin of the evening (6:10) against Jared Weaver.
Â
The last time that the Falcons shut out their opponent was in 2012 against the
Coast Guard at the North South Duals, also with a 49-0 victory. The win also comes on senior night for Messiah, four of which were in the lineup tonight.
The Falcons will return to the mat tomorrow at 12:00 noon for another dual, against The College of New Jersey Lions, in Brubaker Auditorium.
