Grantham, PA - Messiah's Alyssa Mills finished her success in the heptathlon on day one with an overall win (3709 pts) and was followed by Rebecca Querfeld in second place (3371 pts). Querfeld just edged out Dickinson's Kathleen Lyons (3266 pts) to round out the top three positions. An even smaller margin existed at the end between Lyons and Brooke Maneval, who finished in fourth place with 3233 points.

Mills held a slim lead over her teammate Querfeld after day one but pulled out a significant lead with big wins in the long jump (4.75m) and javelin (34.09m). Mills now holds the 3rd all-time best finish in Messiah's program history in the heptathlon.

Querfeld finished third in both the long jump (4.29m) and javelin (23.95m), and came in second place in the final event: the 800m run with a time of 2:46.30. She was runner-up to Maneval with a winning time of 2:45.83. Andrea Fogelsanger finished in sixth place overall and collected personal best times in the javelin (20.34m) and 800m run (2:49.92).

In the decathlon, Andrew Ausel and Tim Hampton completed all ten events after Drew Engle suffered a minor injury yesterday and Dane Cornelius realized the same fate while competing this afternoon. Ausel finished in 11th place overall and Hampton placed 13th.

Ausel capped off the events with a second place finish in the 1500m final (4:52.62). Hampton finished the 1500m run with a seventh place finishing time of 5:21.11.

The men's discus event also took place today before the rest of the events begin tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. In that competition, Trevor Stutzman finished in second place overall with a toss of 49.01m. He was beaten narrowly by former Falcon Fred Fulton, who competed unattached, with a throw of 49.21m. Matthew Miller also competed well in the event and finished in fourth place overall (37.32m).

Day One Update

The Falcons completed their first day of competition in the 2014 Messiah Invitational Thursday. The women participated in the first four events of the heptathlon (100 hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 meters), while the men finished the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 meters in the decathlon. Numerous personal bests were achieved for the women.

In the heptathlon, Alyssa Mills currently holds the top spot on the leaderboard with 2166 points. Her personal best times in the 100 hurdles (17.21) and 200 meters (28.90) led a banner day for the Falcons. Rebecca Querfeld added two personal best performances with an impressive time of 16.95 in the 100 hurdles and threw 9.50 meters in the shot put. She is in second place with 2129 points.

Brooke Maneval and Andrea Fogelsanger sit in fourth (2001 points) and sixth place (1322 points), respectively, after accumulating personal best results in three events. Maneval set new personal standards in the 100 hurdles (18.85), high jump (1.45 meters, and shot put (10.04 meters), while Fogelsanger followed with top results in the high jump (1.27 meters), shot put (8.75 meters), and 200 meters (31.53).

Elizabethtown's Brian Layng dominated the men's decathlon, accumulating 3342 points for first place. In 9th place, Tim Hampton was the Falcons' top performer with five more events to go. Hampton earned a personal in the shot put, throwing 6.37 meters. Andrew Ausel (12th place) and Drew Engle (14th place) each picked up personal bests in the 100 meters. Engle ran a time of 11.82, while Ausel finished at 12.64. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Engle was unable to complete the high jump or the 400 meters after an injury in a previous event. Dane Cornelius is the final Falcon competing and currently sits in 13th place with 2210 points.
