Williamsport, PA – Messiah College saw their three-game win streak come to an end at Lycoming as the Warriors scored two second-half goals to win, 2-0. The loss dropped the Falcons to 8-4-1 overall, and also 2-1 in the MAC Commonwealth.
Lycoming's first score ended the stalemate in the 58th minute. The play started out in the midfield when the Warriors wrestled possession away and worked to the left side. Jordan Logan played ahead to Mateo Velasquez who quickly served toward the goal. Near the left post Abdullahi Abdi slid into a shot to make it 1-0.
The goal was the product of end-to-end play that was mostly non-existent in the first-half. The change of pace seemed to favor the hosts, as Messiah did not settle possession for long stretches in the final frame. Lycoming, however, benefitted from the open play and held most of the territory.
In the 80th minute Lycoming found insurance after they again scrapped for possession and earned a corner. The long in-swinger from Velasquez went to the far post where Kyle Thomas headed it straight through.
Messiah had just a few good opportunities to score, and one of them came when it was still scoreless in the 54th minute.
Danny Rowe made a great play in the midfield to change pace and push toward the 18 for a shot that went less than a foot wide of the left post.
A moment later Lycoming had their own shot from atop the 18 sail just over the crossbar, but soon after that Abdi put them on the board.
With just under 10 minutes to play
Zeb Cross did his best to get Messiah closer, but his free kick offering from the left corner of the 18 was grabbed on the dive the Lycoming keeper.
Messiah did collect eight shots in the second-half, but just three of them went on frame. Lycoming put five shots on frame in the final period, two of which went for the scores.
Connor Bell, starting for the second-straight game, made four saves.
The win pushed Lycoming to 10-1-2 overall, and also 3-0-1 in the conference. The regular-season conference loss for the Falcons is their first since Oct. 15, 2008 against Lebanon Valley. Prior to today's decision they had an active unbeaten streak of 51-0-1.
Messiah will look to get back in the win column when they host Arcadia University on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in front of their Homecoming Day crowd.
