Falcons Sink Shippensburg 28-10

Grantham, PA - The Falcons of Messiah College won seven of 10 matches and defeated the Red Raiders of Shippensburg University 28-10 in their dual meet home opener Friday evening. Lucas Malmberg began the match with a dominant 20-3 technical fall before the Red Raiders answered by winning the next three weight classes. Trailing early, the Falcons won the next six weight classes and cruised to a victory.

As mentioned, No. 1 Lucas Malmberg started the match with a commanding 20-3 technical fall over David Reagan. Malmberg tallied a plethora of takedowns and used multiple tilts to record near fall points for the technical fall.
 
With Messiah leading 5-0, Shippensburg responded with three straight victories at 133, 141, and 149 pounds to take a 10-5 lead over Messiah.
 
The Falcons responded with a hard fought 6-1 decision from Larry Cannon over Adam Martz at 157 pounds and narrowed Shippensburg's lead to 10-8. Cannon scored the only two takedowns of the match for the victory.
 
Next, Jeff Hojnacki kept the Falcons momentum rolling with a 12-4 major decision over Mark Lentz at 165 pounds. Hojnacki used a pair of ankle picks and cruised to the victory.
 
At 174 pounds, No. 6 Derek Beitz won by a 15-3 major decision over Grayson Garber. Beitz scored from takedowns and a tight cradle for near fall points during the bout.
 
Messiah led 16-10 when Ben Swarr won by a 7-2 decision over Hunter Fenk and extended the Falcons lead to 19-10. The only fall of the night was recorded by Kyle Koser over Shane Pepper in just 40 seconds at 197 pounds. Koser used a tight cradle to secure the fall.
 
Jason Wright won by a 7-0 decision over Derek Earnest at 285 pounds during the final bout of the match. Wright led 1-0 heading into the second period before earning four near fall points to break the match open.
 
Messiah improved to 5-1 with the 28-10 victory over Shippensburg and will be back in action on Dec. 17 when they travel to Lock Haven to take on the Bald Eagles at 5:30 p.m.
