Falcons Dominate Duals at Gettysburg

Gettysburg, PA - The Messiah wrestling team competed in three duals at Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon and came away with three dominate victories. The Falcons started the day with a 35-6 victory over the Southern Virginia Knights. Messiah then defeated Penn College by a final of 52-6 and then finished off their day with a 40-9 victory over King's College.

Messiah defeated Southern Virginia 35-6
The No. 6 Falcons of Messiah College began the day with a decisive 35-6 victory over Southen Virginia. Messiah won six of the seven matches wrestled and earned four bonus point victories.
 
After Marshall Myers received a forfeit at 125 pounds, Josh Grossnickle nearly earned a technical fall at 133 pounds over Jayson Cody with a 14-2 major decision. Next, Arty Walsh displayed technical superiority over Christopher Fletcher at 141 pounds and tallied a 19-2 tech fall.
 
Leading 15-0, Jared Furry conquered Travis Trahan at 157 pounds and earned a pin in just 1:33. At 174 pounds, Tyler Hershey grinded out a tough match against Dylan Dawson with an 8-5 decision.
 
Jeremy Bailes kept the Falcons win streak going at 184 pounds when he tallied an 19-3 technical over Nate Rogers. Victor DeFrance gathered the Falcons final victory of the dual when he pinned Caleb West in 1:32.
 
Southern Virginia captured their lone victory of the dual at 285 pounds as Reuben Mendez Jr. won by injury default over Jared Worman.

Messiah defeated Penn College 52-6
The No. 6 Falcons of Messiah College defeated Penn College 52-6 and won six of the seven matches wrestled, which included bonus points in all six victories.
 
Marshall Myers began the match at 125 pounds by blanking Ben Doll 15-0. At 133 pounds, Josh Grossnickle pinned Aaron Doll with just 16 seconds remaining in the first period.
 
Next, Cory  Obendorfer added another technical fall for the Falcons as he defeated Zach Fitzsimmons 16-1. Penn College received their lone victory of the dual meet when Tanner Leid pinned Mason Kemble in 28 seconds at 157 pounds.
 
Leading 34-6, Tag Wilber put Messiah back in the win column with a third period pin over Dan Frankenfield at 174 pounds. Nick Havener and Dan Kiser added pins at to cap off the Falcon victory.

Messiah defeated King's College (Pa.) 40-9
The No. 6 Falcons of Messiah College defeated King's College (Pa.) 40-9 in their final dual meet of the day. Messiah won eight of the ten matches wrestled that included six bonus point victories.
 
King's struck first as James Wright pinned Marshall Myers in 4:31 at 125 pounds. Trailing 6-0, Messiah's Josh Grossnickle tied the dual score when he pinned Dakota Conner on just 43 seconds at 133 pounds.
 
With the score notched at six, Arty Walsh tallied a first period pin over Kevin Kelly at 141 pounds. At 149 pounds, Adam Peris grinded out a tough 10-5 decision over David White.
 
King's won their final match of the dual at 157 pounds at Howard Kiplatrick defeated Josh Toal by a 8-1 decision. Ben Wise put Messiah back in the win column with a dominant 12-2 major decision over Angelo Lussi at 165 pounds.
 
Next, Karrington Washington edged Rene Sousa with a 6-2 decision at 174 pounds. The Falcons ended the match with pins in the finals three matches. Ben Swarr, Nick Havener, and David Giovannacci all added pins for Messiah.
 
Messiah improved to 14-2 with their three dual meet victories this afternoon and will be back in action on Jan. 23 when they compete at the MAC Championships held at Lycoming College.
