Grantham, PA – Two first-half goals, one by
Kirby Robbins and one by
Will Cochran, helped to secure the 2-0 victory for No. 12 Messiah College over Albright College on Homecoming. Robbins tallied in the 13th minute, with Cochran's goal coming in the 40th minute of play.
The Falcons dominated possession throughout the day, as Messiah kept their ball on their offensive end for the majority of the contest. The large share of possession resulted in a 33-0 advantage in shots, their largest advantage this year.
The win kept Messiah undefeated on the season, as it moved their record to 11-0-3 on the year, and 4-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Lions fell to 2-10-2, and 0-5 in the conference.
With the Homecoming festivities generating lots of excitement, the Falcons did not waste time in giving the big crowd what they came to see. As the Falcons passed the ball around the mid-field,
Justin Brautigam fed
David Alejos in the middle of the field. As Alejos turned towards the goal,
Kirby Robbins made a diagonal run across the top of the box. Alejos connected with Robbins, who turned and fired a shot that snuck inside the left post to send the crowd into a frenzy.
After the early goal, the Lions defense settled in and began to hold the Falcons in check. The next 25 minutes consisted of 11 shots for the Falcons, but none would find the net until the 40th minute.
After having his previous two shots saved by keeper Billy Mullen, Cochran's third shot of the night got past Mullen to put the Falcons ahead 2-0.
Zack Bosshard possessed the ball in the Falcons' third and played the ball to
Samuel Ruiz Plaza outside the box on the left side. Ruiz Plaza turned and found Cochran in the middle of the box. He made a few touches toward the goal and ripped a shot that snuck past Mullen and inside the left post.
Despite two more shots before the horn, the Falcons would take a 2-0 advantage into the break. Despite only scoring two goals in the opening period, the Falcons did hold an 18-0 advantage in shots in the first-half.
Messiah continued to attack and put pressure on the Albright defense, but failed to convert despite solid chances throughout the second-half. The Falcons outshot the Lions 15-0 in the second-half, but could not score their third goal en route to the 2-0 victory.
One of the best chances came in the 85th minute of play, when
Ben Haines possessed the ball on the right side of the end line. His cross sailed to the left edge of the six yard mark, where
Atu Galadima was able to head it towards the goal. The ball bounced towards the left post, but was deflected by a Lions defender.
However before Mullen could corral the ball,
Jonathan Groothoff came flying in and struck the ball hard directly in front of the net, however his shot lifted high above the crossbar.
The stellar defensive effort by the Falcons' backline, manned by Dakota Rosenburg,
Josh Bender,
Cooper Robbins, and
Shay Quintin among others throughout the night, held their opponent without a shot for the first time all season. It is also the lowest total of shots allowed since Sept 6. 2014, when they limited Neumann University to one shot.
The Falcons look to continue their hot-streak when they travel to Owings Mills, Md. when they take on conference rival Stevenson University Wednesday night. Kick off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
