Win Over Knights Secures Unbeaten Regular Season

Glenside, PA – No. 9 Messiah College used a big performance from Kirby Robbins and a relentless offensive attack to defeat Arcadia University 3-0 in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon. Robbins scored the first two goals of the day for the Falcons, with Will Cochran adding a goal late.

The win secured the Falcons' fourth undefeated regular season in the past six seasons, with a record of 15-0-3 and a perfect 8-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The loss dropped Arcadia to 9-6-3 and 3-3-2 in conference play.

The Falcons attacked early and often, and took advantage in the 19th minute. Jacob Bender stole possession at the midfield from the Knights, and played the ball down the right side to Colby Thomas. Thomas advanced toward the goal, and crossed into the box to Kirby Robbins, who one-touched it into the net to give the Falcons the early lead.

The Falcons continued to attack offensively, but were unable to extend their lead in the first-half. Their best chance came in the 37th minute when Brit Haseltine was attacking towards the box just left of the middle of the field.  Haseltine stopped and found Zeb Cross directly outside, who touched to his left and fired a shot. The shot dipped low and towards the right post, but Chris Watson made the save to keep the score 1-0 as the teams entered halftime.

The second-half began with an exclamation point for Messiah, but an unfriendly bounce kept the Falcons lead at one. Two minutes into the period, Colby Thomas played a cross deep into the box, where Nick West put a head on it. However West's header struck hard off the crossbar, and bounced overtop the goal for the goal kick for the Knights.

With the Falcons continuing to attack offensively, Messiah finally broke through thanks to Kirby Robbins's second goal of the afternoon. West had the ball on the edge of the Falcons' offensive third along the left sideline. He found Kirby Robbins in the middle of the field 25 yards out. Robbins touched once to his right and ripped a shot that went underneath the dive of Watson and inside the right post to put Messiah ahead 2-0.

Robbins' two goals ran his total to 11 on the season, overtaking Jacob Bender as the team's leading goal-scorer. It is also the second time Robbins has tallied twice in the same game, the other coming Sept. 9 against Oglethrope.

The Falcons sealed the victory with their final goal in the 74th minute by Cochran. Cross ran over to take Messiah's corner kick from the right side of the field. Cross's delivery sailed to the right side of the box, where Cochran headed the ball back towards the far post, where it bounced into the net to seal the 3-0 victory.

The Messiah defense continued their streak of strong performances, as they shut out their opponent for the seventh-consecutive game. This is the longest streak since the 2014 Falcons held their opponent scoreless for nine-consecutive games.

Messiah now enters the MAC Commonwealth Conference playoffs, where they are the No. 1 seed. They will host the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 seed matchup on Thursday evening. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
