Providence, RI - No. 6 Johnson & Wales won the last night matches on Saturday against No. 11 Messiah to finish with a convincing 34-4 win. The Falcons' only points came by way of a major decision by Lucas Malmberg (125) in the opening bout.

The Wildcats collected major decisions of their own at 133, 141, 157, and 197, and a pin by Mike Labell (184) highlighted the host's dominant outing.

Saturday's lopsided decision was surprising as many were expecting a tighter battle of two Top-12 teams. Messiah was certainly not helped by the absence of a few heavy lifters, including Jeff Hojnakci (157) and Ben Swarr (174), who were out of the lineup. Nevertheless, the Wildcats took advantage and overwhelmed the Falcons after the opening bout.

Johnson & Wales collected majors at both 133 and 141 before Stephen Maloney stayed close but ultimately fell in a 5-2 decision to Malik Rasheed at 149. Later in the match, with the Wildcats leading 18-4, Larry Cannon, who is currently No. 6 at 165, moved up a weight to take on No. 9 Stephen Jarrell. Cannon fell behind early but went up 3-2 by way of a second period takedown, but Jarrell recovered and collected a takedown of his own en route to a close 6-4 win.

The momentum for the Wildcats only continued to 184 when No. 18 Mike Labell collected a fall over No. 16 Derek Beitz. Moments later at 197 No. 14 Khamri Thomas piled on the points against No. 11 Kyle Koser for a 14-4 major decision to provide another exclamation point to the Wildcats' win.

Messiah will now be off until Dec. 29 when they compete at the Lock Haven Invitational. The Falcons will also have a small number of competitors at the Midlands across Dec. 29 and 30 in Evanston, Ill.
