CHESTER, Pa. – No. 3 Messiah men's soccer got a first-half goal from
Colby Thomas and held Widener to zero shots on goal in the final 57 minutes to earn a 1-0 road win on Saturday night. The victory pushed the Falcons to 13-1 this season, including 4-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. Widener fell to 3-6-3 (0-3-1).
Familiar Duo
Thomas' goal in the 37' made all the difference in the scoresheet, and it came off a slotted pass from
Kirby Robbins that Thomas ran down in the box. His shot to the upper left corner proved to be the game winner.
The combination of Robbins and Thomas orchestrated a tally for the fifth time this season, all coming in the past six games. Over that same stretch the Falcons have scored 16 goals as a team, with Robbins and Thomas scoring seven between them.
The goal by Thomas gave him seven this season, tied for second on the team with
Nick West behind Robbins, and the helper by Robbins increased his team-leading point total to 22.
Consistent Pressure, Strong Defense
Messiah collected 15 total shots in the game, with seven going on frame. Freshman keeper
Danny Thompson made six saves, a few of which were quick-reaction grabs off close shots and headers. Despite scoring just once, Messiah also held long stretches of territory in an otherwise uneventful game that saw the Falcons' midfield and defense hold the Pride without a shot since the 34' of the first-half.
Conner Bell finished with three saves, two of which came in the 49-second stretch midway through the first period.
Up Next
The victory pushed the Falcons' win streak to 11 games, and they'll look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Lycoming on Tuesday for a match at 3:30 p.m. The Warriors are 14-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference, and themselves hold a six-game win streak that included a 1-0 final over Alvernia this afternoon.
