Center Valley, PA - Messiah men's track and field battled to the finish and came close to the win before finishing as Runner-Up at the MAC Outdoor Championships. The Falcons collected five gold medals along the way and finished with 163 total points.
Widener scored 173 points to edge Messiah, with Stevenson (119) and Lebanon Valley (115) being the only other teams to score in triple-digits. This was Messiah's sixth-straight season finishing as Runner-Up.
Messiah's forceful challenge for the team win started with
Aaron Gray winning Decathlon gold on the second day. His Decathlon win came by just four points over runner-up Jeremiah Clinchoc of Alvernia. Gray's 5,502 points were a personal record by more than 150 points, and he went from third to first on the second day. Teammate
Dane Cornelius took sixth with 4,720 points, and would have undoubtedly finished in third if he hadn't had an unfortunate no-height in the pole vault. Despite the obstacle, Cornelius also took sixth in the javelin throw with a personal record mark of 158'5.75."
Gray also took first in the 110 meter hurdles prelims with a time of 16.12.Â
Benjamin Schott (Steeplechase) and
Christian Pavlovich (javelin) also finished first in their respective events as Messiah collected five total gold medals.
Donnell McNair (400 meter hurdles) and
Christian Pavlovich (javelin) collected gold on Saturday.
"This was a great performance for the men," Messiah head coach
Dale Fogelsanger said. "We came so close, and that was only possible because of the full-heart effort our men gave in every event. We had some huge ups, and we had some big downs, too, and I think these young men learned a lot and will take a lot with them from this weekend."
Messiah finished with 26 total All-MAC honors, with silver medals also coming from the 4x800 meter relay,
Nathaniel Pardoe (800 meter run),
Max Whitehead (400 meter hurdles), and
Benjamin Schott (1500 meter run).
