YORK, Pa. – Conner Bell made a game-saving grab in the final minute, and an early goal from
Cooper Robbins held up as No. 10 Messiah men's soccer won 1-0 at rival York on Wednesday night.
The win moved the Falcons to 6-1 on the season, while York fell to 2-4-1.
It Just Takes One
The Falcons outshot the Spartans 16-11 overall, and they also put more on frame (8) compared to their host (5). Messiah also tied a season-high with 11 corners, though the only score came in the 20' off the foot of
Cooper Robbins. The tally was set-up by a quick turn from
Colby Thomas on the right side, with his short serve from five yards off the near post going back to Robbins in the middle of the box. Robbin beat a crowd to the touch and punched it past keeper Devin Weiner.
Come Up Empty
Despite finishing with just one goal, Messiah had plenty of chances to increase their lead. In the 61'
Kirby Robbins nearly put through a carbon copy of his brother's goal, but his shot went wide of the far left post. Much later, with less than 10 minutes to play, a free kick by
Danny Brandt from 30 yards out was curled perfectly to the far post but right into the hands of Weiner.
The Falcons' best look for some insurance came in the 87' when
Kirby Robbins was played through the Spartan defense to go 1v1 with Weiner. The time was short for Robbins to react, however, and his quick touch went into the body of the sliding goalie.
Save of the Game
York's Chris Hobbs put three of his four shots on goal, and all three of those came in the final six minutes of play. Two were saved by Conner Bell and the other—an offering in the 87'—hit the post.
One of those saves by Bell was absolutely terrific, and it came in the 89' when a long serve was played into the box, knocked around twice, and landed at the feet of Hobbs for a poke toward the right side. Bell recovered from the left post and dove for the save, and he managed to keep the ball in front of the goal line as most of his body slid into the net.
Up Next
Messiah next plays this Saturday when they return to Shoemaker Field to host Misericordia at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars are 0-7 on the season and coming off a 3-1 loss to Rutgers-Camden from Tuesday of this week.
