Roasted: Robbin's Winner Downs Blue Jays in Overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – No. 7 Messiah men's soccer etched another chapter into a storied rivalry with Elizabethtown on Wednesday night, as Colby Thomas and Kirby Robbins tallied late to help the Falcons earn a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win the Marshmallow Bowl.

The overtime win was Messiah's second-straight, and it moved their overall record to 8-1. Elizabethtown fell to 5-4.

Burned
Messiah was all over their hosts at the beginning of the game, but Etown held firm and even put pressure on the Falcons in the final minutes of the first period. In total, the Blue Jays took six shots in the final 14 minutes before the break, with Gilbert Waso hitting the crossbar in the 37'.

The lively play continued into the second-half, but it wasn't until the 69' before either team could break through. The first to score was Etown, and they did so off a set play right in front of their bench. The foul on Shay Quintin could have gone either way, but the Blue Jays took advantage when Danny Sullivan served a sharp pass to the middle of the box where Mitchell Gochnauer was first to the ball for a header inside the far post.

The goal was the second of his season, and it held up for more than 12 minutes.

Stay Puft
Colby Thomas came into tonight's game with four goals and an assist in his last five matches, including the game-winner from Saturday's overtime win over Misericordia. Tonight, Thomas again provided a huge play with a game-tying goal in the 81' of play.

The tally came just after head coach Brad McCarty switched Thomas from the right wing to the left, and he justified the move with a deft shot from the midfield that beat keeper Brian Gately near post.

Crisp (and Golden)
The Blue Jays took the first shot in the overtime period, but thankfully JD Haaf's hard strike from atop the 18 went right to keeper Conner Bell. A few short minutes later Nick West attacked from the right side and sent a short cross to the near post where Kirby Robbins flicked a header over Gately's reach. Truly, the Blue Jay keeper had no chance to react, and the celebration was on for the Falcons.

The overtime win for Messiah was their second-straight for the Falcons over the Blue Jays in the rivalry game dubbed the Marshmallow Bowl. Last season, Jacob Bender knotted the extra period game-winner (1-0).

Up Next
Messiah will next take the field on Saturday when they host MAC Commonwealth opponent Alvernia at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Wolves are 5-4-1 and finished with a scoreless draw against King's earlier this evening.
