Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Falcons Fall Behind, Drop One-Goal Match to Fords

ROSEMONT, Pa. – No. 18 Haverford men's soccer took half as many shots but found moments of quality in both their offensive and defensive thirds to earn a 2-1 upset of No. 11 Messiah. Nick Jannelli scored both goals for the Fords, with Nick West tallying for the Falcons.

On Target
Nick Jannelli scored eight goals in his college debut last year, and his two tallies today put his 2017 total to four goals already across two matches. His first goal came in the 21' when he rocketed a right-footed shot from 25 yards out over the reach of Connor Bell. In the 53' Jannelli put Haverford 2-0, this time with a left-footed strike from 25 yards out.

Jannelli's goals came on two of just seven total shots by the Fords, with just one other offering going on frame. Nevertheless, they were all the Fords needed to keep the Falcons grounded.

Too Little, Too Late
Though facing a 2-0 deficit the Falcons were in the game, especially as they attempted 10 shots in the final period. Nick West cut into the Fords' lead with a tally in the 70' but Messiah attempted just three more shots the rest of the way. Just one of Messiah's final three shots—an offering by Justin Brautigam in the 78'—needed to be saved.

In the Box
Jeremy Astesano collected six saves for Haveford in a big performance, the Fords' defense did well to counter Messiah's quality chances around the box. The Falcons also generated six corners, though just one came in the final 20 minutes of play.

Up Next
Messiah will look to get back in the win column when they play in their home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Montclair State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on Shoemaker Field.
