Stellar Depth Propels Falcons To Undefeated Day

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Messiah wrestling team moved to 7-0 on the season in duals Saturday afternoon at Muhlenberg College in the Scotty Wood Duals. They picked up victories over Lackawanna College 29-20, Kent State at Tuscarawas 57-0, Temple University (Club) 48-9, and Central College 27-25. Nick Barnhart, Sean Redington, and Brian Shermeyer all picked up three wins for Messiah on the day while seven Falcons overall picked up two or more wins. Messiah will be back in action after Thanksgiving on Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 at home in Hitchcock Arena where they will be hosting the Petrofes Invitational.

Messiah Defeats Lackawanna College - 29-20
Jordan Howard got the Falcons out to a good start for the day with a decision victory over Michael Tuffy at 125 to put Messiah up 3-0. Lackawanna answered right back with a pin at 133 to give them a 6-3 lead in the dual before Dalton Daugherty gave the Falcons a slight 7-6 advantage after a 14-4 major decision win at 141. Braeden Swab gave Lackawanna the lead back with a 4-0 decision over Jake Coniglio to take a 9-7 lead. Nick Barnhart then picked up his first fall of the day to give Messiah the lead at 13-9 before a Lackawanna tech. fall at 165 swung the momentum of the match once again, as they took a 14-13 lead.

The next three matches proved to be the difference in the dual with Messiah picking up a major decision, forfeit, and fall to take a 29-14 lead and give the Falcons the dual victory. Messiah dropped the final match at 285 to make the final score of the dual 29-20.

Messiah Defeats Kent State at Tuscarawas - 57-0
The Falcons used two forfeits and two falls to fuel a 24-0 lead early on in their dual with the Golden Eagles. Nunez then recorded a fall at 157 lbs. to give Messiah a 30-0 lead before a decision and forfeit at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. made it 39-0 with three matches to go in the dual.

Messiah finished out the dual with two falls and a forfeit to give them their second win of the day, 57-0.

Messiah Defeats Temple University (Club) - 48-9
Five consecutive forfeits gave the Falcons a 30-0 lead against the Owls. Matt Pangle picked up a fall at 165 to extend the Falcons lead to 36-0 with just four matches left. Messiah picked up a forfeit at 174 before the Owls picked up a decision at 184 and a forfeit at 197 to make the score 42-9 heading into the final match.

Sam Blevins picked up a fall over Nico Gyorgy to give Messiah a 48-9 win and move them to 3-0 on the day heading into their final dual of the day against Central College.

Messiah Defeats Central College - 27-25 
A 20-2 Redington tech. fall at 125 got Messiah out to a 5-0 lead after the first match. The lead was short lived however as a fall for Central at 133 gave them a slim 6-5 lead before a disqualification at 141 gave the lead back to Messiah at 11-6. Robert Areyano snatched the lead right back at 149 with a fall to make it 12-11 Central.

The next three matches gave Messiah all the momentum in the dual as Barnhart and Shermeyer picked up falls while Pangle earned a 20-6 major decision to make the score 27-12 heading into the final three matches of the afternoon.

The Dutch earned victories in the final three matches, but did not accumulate enough points to earn the win in the dual. It was a decision, major decision, and fall to make the final score 27-25 and give Messiah a 4-0 day overall.

Breaking Down The Duals
As mentioned, Nick Barnhart, Brian Shermeyer and Sean Redington all picked up three wins on the day. Barnhart recorded three falls while Shermeyer picked up two forfeits and a fall, and Redington had two forfeits and a tech. fall. In all, Messiah had 21 wrestlers see the mats on Saturday afternoon with 19 of them earning at least one victory.

What's Up Next
As mentioned, the Falcons improve to 7-0 in duals this season. After they break for Thanksgiving, Messiah will be back in action on their home mats for the Petrofes Invitational at Messiah, which takes place on Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 inside Hitchcock Arena.
