GRANTHAM, Pa. - The No. 17 Messiah wrestling team earned a 29-15 victory over the McDaniel Green Terror to start a busy days of duals before dropping matches against Division II Millersville (21-18) and Division I Lock Haven (43-3).
The Falcons move to 8-2 on the season in duals and remain undefeated against Division III foes this season. Messiah will be back on the mats next Saturday when they travel to New Jersey City for three duals against Johnson & Wales, Wabash, and the United States Merchant Marine.

The Green Terror started the dual with a pin at 133 lbs. to take an early 6-0 lead. At 141 lbs.
Dalton Daugherty battled late with an escape in the final minute, but a McDaniel takedown earned the Green Terror a 7-5 decision to take a 9-0 lead through two matches.
Messiah got on the board thanks to an 8-3 decision by
Nick Nunez. After an early takedown in the first period, Nunez held riding time after the opening period. The match was tied after a pair of escapes, but Nunez with another escape and takedown in the beginning of the third. McDaniel escaped, but Nunez beat the buzzer with a late takedown along with the riding time point for an 8-3 victory.
At 157 lbs,
Stephen Maloney kept Messiah rolling by collecting an immediate take down before bullying his opponent to his back for a total of 12 nearfall points in the first period. Maloney took a 14-0 lead into the second period and earned a quick escape of the 15-0 technical fall just nine seconds into the second period.
Like Maloney before him,
Kevin Edwards jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after a takedown and four nearfall points in the first minute of the opening period. After two more nearfall points, Edwards nearly picked up a fall at the end of the first period, but earned four more tilt points to take a 12-0 lead after three minutes on the mat. After staring the period in neutral, Edwards earned a quick takedown and finished off the technical fall with four more tilt points for an 18-0 tech fall in 3:32.
At 174 lbs.
Brian Shermeyer earned an 11-3 major decision after a dominating first period. Shermeyer picked up back-to-back takedowns, letting up his opponent on both for escapes. After a third first-period takedown, Shermeryer flipped his opponent to his back and earned four nearfall points for a 10-2 lead heading to the second. A quiet second and third periods resulted in just one escape point for McDaniel and Shermeyer picking up a riding time point.
After a pair of takedowns,
David Stevens had a huge lift with one minute remaining in the period, throwing his opponent to his back for four nearfall points. A roll-through tilt resulted in four more near fall points and Stevens took a 12-1 lead after the first period. A takedown in the first 30 seconds of the second period and a tilt gave Stevens the 19-1 tech fall in 3:49 to build Messiah's lead to 22-9.
Spencer Clements fell into an early hole after a McDaniel takedown. Clements fought through a number of tilt attempts in the opening period, but with 33 seconds remaining in the second period, McDaniel earned a fall to make it a 22-15 Messiah lead.
Carter Urich trailed crazy scramble at the end of the first first period. Urich got the better of the exchange, spinning his opponent to his back and earning four back points in the final moments of the period to take an 8-3 lead. After the fireworks of the first, a quiet second featured just an escape to make it an 8-4 lead for Urich. A scoreless final period followed and Urich earned a 8-4 decision, bumping the Falcons' lead to 25-15.
Jordan Howard scored a pair of nearly identical takedowns in the first period before working hard on top in the second as he attempted to flip his opponent to his back. After two periods, Howard held a 6-1 lead with a huge advantage in riding time. Two takedowns and a riding time point gave Howard the 11-2 major decision, giving the Falcons a 29-15 victory in the dual.

Josiah Gehr dominated Millersville's Anthony Wiggins with a tech fall to start the dual for the Falcons. Gehr earned a takedown in the opening period and was a bully on top for the remainder of the match. Coming off a stellar weekend at the Petrofes Invitational,
Garret Cornell fell into an early 2-0 hole after being taken down in the final minute of the first period by Millersville's Ryan McGuire. Cornell was unable to break loose of McGuire's control in the second period. On two occasions it looked like Cornell was about to break loose, but he was unable to get out and the score remained 2-0 heading to the third. McGuire was called for stalling twice, giving Cornell a point, but the Marauders would hold on for a tight, 2-1 decision.
An early takedown from Millersville's Jackson Erb at 149 lbs. was all the Marauders would need, but Erb would earn a late fall in the final minute of the third period to take the Marauders' first lead of the match at 9-5.
Stephen Maloney would swing the lead back in favor of the Falcons with a major decision. Maloney worked hard on top at 157 lbs. and built an 8-0 lead in the as the match turned to the third period. Just before the buzzer, Maloney put the cherry on top of his victory with a takedown and a riding time point for the 11-0 major decision. Maloney's second win of the day would tie the dual at 9-9
After Millersville took the lead back at 12-9 with a 6-0 decision by Jarrett Feeney at 165 lbs.,
Brian Shermeyer earned a dramatic 3-2 decision to tie things back up. Trailing 2-1 in the final 10 seconds on the third period, Shermeyer caught a leg and earned his only takedown of the match to claim the 3-2 decision.
Messiah put themselves back in the driver's seat of the dual with a 6-1 decision from
David Stevens. The junior, jumped out to an earl lead with a first period takedown before earning an escape and another takedown in the third period. A final riding time point, gave Stevens a 6-1 decision and the Falcons the lead back at 15-12.
At 197 lbs.
Joe Embleton, looked to nearly be taken down about a minute into the first period, but the sophomore fought through the pressure and earned a takedown of his own to take a 2-0 lead. A strong ride for the next four minutes, including the entirety of the second period, gave Embleton a 2-0 lead heading to the final period. After choosing down, Embleton fought off a number of tilt attempts from his opponent to earn a 3-0 decision with a riding time point.
With the Falcons leading 18-12 heading into the final two bouts, Millersville earned a 17-1 technical fall by Josh Walls at 285 lbs. to make it a one-point match at 18-17 heading to the final bout at 125 lbs.
The Marauders completed the comeback with a 13-0 major decision by Devin Flannery at 125 lbs. to earn a 21-18 victory in the dual.
The Falcons will complete their day against Division I Lock Haven at 6:00 p.m.
Lock Haven defeats Messiah 43-3Â |Â Results
The Lock Haven Bald Eagles flexed their muscle against the Falcons in the final dual of the day. The Bald Eagles earned a comfortable 43-3 victory, picking up seven bonus point victories in the dual.
David Stevens earn the lone decision for the Falcons in the dual thanks to a stellar first period at 184 lbs. His strong first period featured a pair of takedowns and four nearfall points to put Stevens up 8-3. In the second period, Stevens battled through a pair of tilt attempts, but hung tough on the bottom, keeping his 8-3 lead heading into the third. In the third Stevens allowed an escape point, but held on for the 8-5 decision over a quality Division I opponent.
Outside of Stevens' decision at 184 lbs., Messiah's strongest showings came from
Garret Cornell at 141 lbs. and
Matt Pangle at 165 lbs. Both Cornell and Pangle fell by decision.
Cornell was tied 4-4 late in the second period after picking up a reversal late in the period. A stalling call against Cornell and an escape for Lock Haven put Cornell in a 6-4 hole with less than a minute remaining in the third. A late takedown for Lock Haven gave the Bald Eagles an 8-4 decision.
Lock Haven earned four falls and a tech fall en route to the 43-3 victory over the Falcons.
Messiah will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to New Jersey City to take on Johnson & Wales, Wabash, and United State Merchant Marine in duals.
