Falcons Handle Road Test, Top Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Messiah wrestling team handled the Elizabethtown Blue Jays on Friday night to the tune of a 29-13 victory. The Falcons claimed seven of the 10 bouts to improve to 15-5 in duals this season. Josiah Gehr (125 lbs.) and Dalton Daugherty (133 lbs.) started the dual with a pair of decisions before Nick Nunez (141 lbs.) claimed a 20-5 technical fall to give Messiah an 11-0 lead. the Falcons built on that momentum and after a forfeit at 174 lbs., Messiah led 23-4.
 
Denny Karas (285 lbs.) put the finishing touches on the victory with a first-period fall in 1:18 to give Messiah the 29-13 victory.
 
As mentioned, is was Josiah Gehr and Dalton Daugherty getting the Falcons off to a quick start with a pair of decisions in the first two bouts of the night. Gehr defeated the Blue Jays' Josh McLaughlin 7-1 at 125 lbs. for his 30th victory of the season. Daugherty followed-up moments later with a 4-1 decision over Austin Jones at 133 lbs. to put Messiah up 6-0.
 
Nick Nunez used all seven minutes to claim a 20-5 technical fall over Nick Gonzalez in the 141 lbs. bout to nearly double the Messiah lead to 11-0.
 
After Josh Paisley got Elizabethtown on the board with a 10-1 major decision, Kevin Edwards and David Stevens responded for the Falcons with back-to-back decisions at 157 and 165 lbs. Edwards picked-up the 4-1 decision while Stevens earned a 10-4 victory.
 
Brian Shermeyer claimed a forfeit for Messiah at 174 lbs. to give the Falcons a massive 23-4 lead with just three bouts remaining.
 
The Blue Jays attempted to battle back with a technical fall at 184 lbs. and a major decision at 197 lbs., but Denny Karas capped off the 29-13 Messiah victory with a quick fall in just 1:18. The pin was his ninth of the season. The freshman owns a 13-12 overall record with nine of his decisions coming by falls.
 
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday evening when they travel to the College of New Jersey for a dual at 7:00 p.m. Messiah will then wrap up the dual season with a home dual on Wednesday (Feb. 13) against McDaniel at 7:00 p.m. in Hitchcock Arena.
