GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 15 Messiah Wrestling team earned a comfortable 34-6 victory over the Gettysburg Bullets on Friday night. The Falcons started their night off with a pair of technical falls by
Sean Redington (125 lbs.) and
Josiah Gehr (133 lbs.) to open up a 10-0 lead.
Stephen Maloney added a technical fall at 157 lbs. as the Falcons won eight of the 10 bouts to cruise to the road victory.
As mentioned, Friday night's dual opened with a pair of technical falls from
Sean Redington at 125 lbs. and
Josiah Gehr at 133 lbs. Redington made quick work of Gettysburg's Ethan Greenberg, earning a 24-9 tech fall in 3:53. Redington earned eight takedowns in the first period along with a nearfall to lead 18-7 after one period. He picked up the victory less than a minute into the second period.
Gehr delivered a similar match at 133 lbs. with 11 first-period takedowns en route to a 28-13 tech fall in just 3:36.
At 141 lbs., Gettysburg earned a takedown and near fall in the third period to pick up their first decision of the night with a 9-4 victory to pull within seven at 10-3. The Bullets followed with their second-straight decision in the tightest match of the night at 149 lbs. Gettysburg's Eric Mougalian and Messiah's
Jake Coniglio were back-and-forth throughout their entire match. The duo was tied 4-4 after the opening period before Mougalian took a 7-6 lead after two. After the pair traded reversals, Mougalian took an 11-10 lead following an escape in the third. In the final seconds it looked like Coniglio earned a takedown, but he was just late of the horn and Gettysburg earned the 12-10 decision after the riding time point.
Following the thrilling decision for Gettysburg at 149 lbs., the Falcons' lead was trimmed to four at 10-6.
That was as close as the Bullets would get as Messiah would claim the final six matches of the night.
Stephen Maloney got the Falcons back on track with a technical fall over Mike Daugherty 22-7 in 4:55. Maloney improved his career record against the Bullets to 11-1 with the victory.
Kevin Edwards (165 lbs.) and
Kevin Diehl (174 lbs.) followed with back-to-back decisions. Edwards earned a slim 9-7 decision over Phil Angelo at 165 lbs. while Diehl picked up a 15-12 decision over Mike Carioscia at 174 lbs. despite Carioscia dominating the second period.
The decisions from Edwards and Diehl gave Messiah a 21-6 lead that was bolstered from a Gettysburg forfeit at 184 lbs. to
David Stevens.
Twelve takedowns, two escapes, a nearfall, and a reversal led
Joe Embleton to the 30-18 major decision in a high-scoring affair against Jan Stix at 197 lbs.
Carter Urich put the finishing touches on the victory for the Falcons with a takedown late in the third period to earn the 6-3 decision at 285 lbs. Messiah earned the 34-6 victory, winning the final 24 points of the match.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend in the Wheaton Invitation on Friday and Saturday. Wrestling gets underway at 11:00 a.m. local time on Jan. 31.
