CARLISLE, Pa. – The Messiah women's track and field team opened the 2021-22 season on Saturday with a short trip to Dickinson for the DuCharme Invitational. The Falcons earned a second-place finish in the event, finishing the day with a pair of first-place finishes.
Katelyn Bernotas won the mile with a time of 5:24.16 and
Kate Prothero led three Falcons in the top-three positions in the 3,000 Meter with a time of 11:32.40.
In total the Falcons nabbed a dozen first-place finishes with five second places and five third places as well as the two victories.
Dickinson won the team standings with 249 points. Behind Messiah was Goucher in third place with 64 points. Lehman (18 points) and Hood (10 points) rounded out the women's field on Saturday.
As noted, Messiah best performance of the day came in the 3,000 Meter with
Kate Prothero leading three-straight Messiah finishers in the event. Prothero won the event with a time of 11:32.40 while
Amber Swaisgood and
Amber Fogelsanger were neck in neck, taking second and third, respectively, with times of 11:36.37 and 11:36.67.
Katelyn Bernotas was the only other Falcon to win an event on the women's side on Saturday, claiming the Mile with a time of 5:24.16. Her time was more than 12 seconds ahead of the second place time of 5:36.97, turned in by Dickinson's Lilianna Matala.
The Falcons turned in a pair of second place finishes in field events with
Cadee Wood nabbing runner-up honors in the Pole Vault with a mark of 2.75m and
Emily Gourley too second in the High Jump with a height of 1.40m.
The Falcons also picked up a handful of third-place finishes with solid individual performances included
Kirsten Howland (5,000 Meter, 20.49.06),
Claire Miller (55 Meter Hurdles, 9.50),
Cassidy Chandler (400 Meter, 1:08.46), and
Emma Graybill (200 Meter, 28.16).
Messiah took second in both the 4x200 Meter Relay and the 4x400 Meter Relay. In the 4x200 Meter, the team of
Claire Miller,
Emma Graybill,
Halle Jennett, and
Ellie Longshaw with a time of 1:51.79 to take the silver while in the 4x400 Meter Relay
Cassidy Chandler,
Olivia Cory,
Katelyn Bernotas, and
Brieanna Hess combined for a time of 4:25.57.
Messiah will take the rest of the month off from competition and will be back in action at the end of January on Jan. 22 at Alvernia.
