CLARION, Pa. - The Messiah wrestling team squared off with Division I Clarion University on Friday night in a dual on the road. The Golden Eagles earned victories in nine of the 10 contested matches in the dual, with
Josiah Gehr picking up a fall in 4:37 at 133 lbs. for Messiah's lone victory of the evening.
A number of other Falcons turned in quality performances in the dual with
Dalton Daugherty edged in extra time at 141 lbs. while
Brian Shermeyer (174 lbs.) and
David Stevens (184 lbs.) dropping close decisions.
The Falcons and Golden Eagles contested a total of 25 exhibition matches as well with Clarion earning a 25-0 record in bouts outside of the dual.
Messiah will have a quick turnaround as they host the Delaware Valley Aggies at 12:00 p.m. in Hitchcock Arena for a dual.
Gehr Highlights Dual for Falcons
The Falcons showed well in their dual against Division I Clarion, especially early. Messiah dropped a tight 7-4 decision at 125 lbs. to fall into an early 3-0 hole, but
Josiah Gehr picked up a fall of Hunter Verge at 133 lbs. to give Messiah the lead at 6-3. Gehr, making his season debut, was a National Qualifier during his freshman season at 125 lbs. for the Falcons and narrowly missed out on another trip to Nationals last year after withdrawing due to injury. His presence in the line-up is a welcomed sight for the Falcons and he made his impact known late in the second period with the fall.
It nearly looked like Messiah was going to pick up their second-straight victory when
Dalton Daugherty held a two-point lead in the third period, but Kyle Schickel earned a late takedown at 141 lbs. and eventually won the bout in extra time.
Nick Barnhart put up a good fight at 157 lbs., falling to Taylor Ortz by a 6-1 decision.
Brian Shermeyer (174 lbs.) and
David Stevens (184 lbs.) also had solid performances on Friday night in the dual, also dropping narrow decisions by scores of 5-2 and 4-3, respectively.
The Golden Eagles closed out the dual with falls as 197 lbs. and 285 lbs. to earn the 35-6 victory.
Exhibition Matches
Messiah and Clarion wrestled a total of 25 exhibition matches, allowing a number of Falcons to see action on Friday night. The Golden Eagles prevailed in 24 of the bouts, with
Josiah Gehr earning a victory due to a medical forfeit over Logan Mazzeo.
Jordan Howard (125 lbs.),
Dalton Daugherty (141 lbs.),
Ike Bryner (149 lbs.), and
David Stevens (184 lbs.) all fought hard in exhibition matches, but were on the wrong-side of decisions that were decided by three-points or less.
What's Up Next
The Falcons will be back on the mats in less than 24 hours when they host the Delaware Valley Aggies for a dual at noon in Hitchcock Arena. The dual will be the first of three duals between these two squads in the next 10 days. Messiah will host the Aggies again on Feb. 16 while Messiah will travel to Doylestown on Feb. 23.
