Women's Swimming Top Lions

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah women's swimming team topped visiting Albright College, 154-73, in Fredericksen Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. Seven different Falcons notched first-place finishes as Messiah improved to 2-0 on the season with the home victory.

The Falcons took home the first event of the afternoon, the 400 yard medley relay. A relay team of Sophie Schulze, Abigail Soerens, Maelyn Elder, and Lainey Flanagan registered a winning time of 4:18.89.

Freshman Evangeline Soerens led the longest event of the afternoon, the 1000 yard freestyle, posting a winning time 12:03.00. Flanagan placed a top time of 2:03.61 in the 200 yard freestyle, as Schulze touched first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.09).

The Messiah swimmers continued to tally first-place finishes. Abigail Soerens contributed a top time of 1:10.95 in the 100 yard backstroke, clipping teammate Rachel Bruns (1:12.31). Caitlin Ross turned in a first-place finish as well, touching first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:27.78). Elder placed second behind Ross, posting a time of 2:31.97.

Other notable individual first-place finishes included Abigail Soerens in the 100 yard freestyle (56.96), Molly Elspas in the 200 yard backstroke (2:21.40), Evangeline Soerens in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:34.78), Schulze in the 500 yard freestyle (5:32.13), and Katelyn Boyce in the 100 yard butterfly (1:03.93).

Messiah gained considerable points with second-place finishes as well. Boyce touched second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.61, finishing just one second behind Flanagan. The Falcons were well-represented in the 100 yard backstroke as Libby Gorske finished in second (1:07.21) behind teammate Schulze. The junior also touched second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.85, as Ross turned in a second-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:44.63).

The Falcons, with consecutive wins, have held their opponents to under triple digit team points for the second time this season.

Messiah (2-0) will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 16, when it competes in the Virtual MAC Championships in Fredericksen Natatorium, set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
