Falcons Earn Three Victories at Waynesburg Duals

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Messiah wrestling team turned in a strong 3-0 performance at the Waynesburg Duals with victories over Fairmont State (24-17), Washington and Jefferson (30-17), and Waynesburg (39-16). The duals were the first of the season for the Falcons, who improve their dual record on the season to 3-0. The Falcons will be back in action on the Friday after Thanksgiving when they host the annual Petrofes Invitational in Hitchcock Arena. The action on Friday, Dev. 2 begins at 12:00 p.m.
 
Highlights from the Day
The Falcons started their day with a 24-17 victory over Fairmont State. Messiah used consecutive pins from Asa Brunk at 141 lbs. and Noah Rice at 149 lbs. to put Messiah firmly in the lead at 15-3. After Fairmont State closed the gap to 15-11, Messiah earned a major decision from Austin Brass and Ryder Slayton and Christopher Crastley earned decisions to put Messiah up 24-11. Despite Fairmont State earning a fall at heavyweight, Messiah claimed the 24-17 victory to begin a busy day.
 
Against Washington and Jefferson, Messiah fell into an early hole trailing 11-0 after three weight classes. From there the Falcons rattled off three straight falls from Clay Gainer (149 lbs.), Noah Rice (157 lbs.), and Garret Cornell (165 lbs.) to flip the script and take an 18-11 lead. From there decisions from John Sumner (174 lbs.) and Ryder Slayton (184 lbs.) followed before Joe Embleton picked up a first period pin at 197 lbs. Like their first match of the day, Washington and Jefferson earned a fall at heavyweight, but Messiah claimed the dual by a score of 30-17.
 
Against Waynesburg, Messiah got off to a quicker start thanks to a forfeit at 125 lbs. and a fall from Bryce Arnold at 133 lbs. In the middle weights, Messiah earned a 4-0 decision from Clay Gainer and back-to-back falls from Noah Rice and Jared Butler at 157 lbs. and 165 lbs. Rice earned a first-period pin while Butler beat the buzzer in the final 30 seconds of his bout. Joe Embleton earned his second pin of the day in a third-period fall as well as the Falcons earned a 39-16 victory.
 
What's Up Next
The Falcons will be back in action in two weeks when Messiah hosts the Petrofes Invitational on Dec. 2-3 in Hitchcock Arena.
