Falcons Ground Eagles in Road Shutout

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - The No. 1 Messiah men's soccer claimed their eighth-straight victory on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over the Eastern Eagles. The victory improves the Falcons to 13-0-1 on the season and 3-0-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Falcons were in control of the afternoon match with a 19-3 advantage in shots while holding the Eagles to just one attempt on goal. Matt McDonald scored in the 25th minute off a feed from Davis Pagett while Isaac Schmitke and Sam Phillips added insurance in the middle of the second half as Messiah earned their 10th shutout of the season.

The Falcons have just four regular season matches remaining in the 2023 season and will host the Hood Blazers on Wednesday, Oct. 18 on Shoemaker Field at 7:00 p.m.

How It Happened
The Falcons were on the attack for the bulk of the start of Friday's match, but it wasn't until the 25th minute that they found the back of the net. Davis Pagett received a pass on the right side, taking him to the endline. A centering pass found its way through a pair of defenders and to the foot of Matt McDonald at the top of the six. A one-time finish in the middle of the goal mouth gave Messiah a 1-0 lead midway through the half.

Messiah held the 1-0 lead through halftime while outshooting the Eagles 5-1 in the period.

In the second half, the Falcons found a pair of tallies as insurance. First it was Isaac Schmitke finding the back of the net on a corner kick from Jared Morlote in the 61st minute. Schmitke was unmarked on the back, right post as Morlote's delivery found his head for a 2-0 score.

Just moments later, in the 63rd minute, Sam Phillips took control of a loose ball and hammered a shot from the left side of the box inside the left post for a 3-0 Messiah advantage. That was all the offense the Falcons would need as their defense posted their 10th shutout of the season. The Falcons have allowed just five goals in 14 games this season.

What's Up Next
