COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Messiah wrestling team went 2-2 on Saturday at the Manganaro Duals hosted by Ursinus College. The Falcons defeated the Rhode Island College Anchormen (35-6) and Southern Maine Huskies (25-24), but fell short against the Ursinus Bears (25-16) and Coast Guard Bears (33-11).
Josiah Gehr was especially impressive for the Falcons at 141 lbs., going 4-0 on the day with a pair of falls and a pair of technical falls.
Messiah will be back in action next weekend when they head to the Budd Whitehill Duals in Williamsport, Pa. for a two-day Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Ursinus defeats Messiah – 25-16
After Ursinus earned a decision at 125 lbs. to begin the dual, the Falcons won four-straight bouts to open up a 16-3 lead midway through the match.
Josiah Gehr (141 lbs.) and
Garret Cornell (157 lbs.) highlighted the effort with dominating technical falls by scores of 16-1 and 17-0, respectively. Additionally,
Caiden Heller (133 lbs.) and
Levi Snyder (149 lbs.) earned decisions by scores of 3-1 and 7-2 to help the Falcons build their lead.
Ursinus dominated the upper weight classes with a pair of falls, a technical fall, and a pair of decisions to earn a 25-16 victory. In total, the Bears claimed the final five bouts to cap off the victory.

The Anchormen opened their dual with the Falcons with a pair of decision, but Messiah picked up a fall by
Josiah Gehr at 141 lbs. to tie the match at 6-6. Gehr picked up his fall in 2:13 and started a string of eight-straight victories for the Falcons. Messiah never looked back, continuing with a fall by
Dalton Monger at 149 lbs. in just 1:03.
Clay Gainer then picked up a 21-12 major decision at 157 lbs. before
Garret Cornell earned a pin in 5:38 at 165 lbs.
A major decision from
Austin Brass (174 lbs.) kept things rolling before
Ryder Slayton (184 lbs.),
Micah Kunkle (197 lbs.), and
Hayden Benner (285 lbs.) finished things off with decisions to give Messiah the 35-6 victory.

Against the United States Coast Guard Academy, Messiah earned a trio of victories, but did not have enough to take down the Bears.
Tyler Ratledge (125 lbs.) started things off with a 5-4 decision while
Ryder Slayton (184 lbs.) also earned a decision in the upper weights.
Josiah Gehr earned the lone bonus-point victory for the Falcons in the dual, picking up an impressive 19-4 technical fall at 141 lbs.
Coast Guard won seven of the 10 contested bouts to claim the 33-11 victory.

Messiah defeats Southern Maine – 25-24*
The Falcons ended their day with a wild, 25-24 victory over the Southern Maine Huskies on criteria. Messiah trailed 20-6 wmidway through the dual. Through the 157 lbs. weight-class
Josiah Gehr had picked up Messiah's only points with a late fall in the third-period at 141 lbs.
Garret Cornell picked up some big points for the Falcons at 157 lbs. with a pin in just 57 seconds, but the Huskies claimed a 9-1 major decision at 165 lbs. to hold a 24-12 lead.
Messiah responded with three-striaght victories from
Ryder Slayton (184 lbs.), Sawyer Derszynski (197 lbs.) and
Hayden Benner (285 lbs.). Slayton started things off with a 7-0 decision before Dereszynski earned a third-period fall to keep Messiah's hope alive. Dereszynski's fall pulled the Falcons within three points at 24-21 as the dual turned to the final bout of the day. Needing a decision to tie the dual, Benner and Southern Maine's Nick Beebe went to overtime with Benner earning the takedown to claim a 7-4 decision.
Benner's decision tied the score at 24-24, but by way of their three falls, Messiah claimed the dual on criteria by a score of 25-24.
