ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Messiah Wrestling team competed at the Scotty Wood Duals hosted by Muhlenberg College on Saturday, Nov. 23. The Falcons competed in three duals against Rowan College of South Jersey, Muhlenberg College, and Shenandoah University. The Falcons picked up the team win against Rowan with a score of 46-9. Messiah continued their day with a 32-13 team win over host Muhlenberg. The Falcons finished their day with a 43-7 victory over Shenandoah to go 3-0 on the day.
The Falcons are next in action on Friday, Dec. 6, when they host the two-day Petrofes Invitational in Hitchcock Arena. Friday action begins at 12:00 p.m. with Saturday action beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Messiah University vs Rowan College of South Jersey
The Messiah University Falcons defeated the Rowan College of South Jersey Roadrunners with a team score of 46-9.
Bryce Arnold won the 125 lbs. bout via forfeit after two rounds. Arnold collected a score of 12 points across the first two rounds with two takedowns and a two and four count nearfall. At 133 lbs.
Mason Casey was defeated by Stephen Dmytryk via a 9-7 decision. Casey picked up an early takedown, but Dmytryk was able to escape and earn his own takedown in first round action. Casey earned his own escape and takedown counter in the third period to take the 7-4 advantage. Two escapes and a takedown from Dmytryk late in the round gave him the 9-7 win.
At 141 lbs.,
Asa Brunk won via technical fall over Joaquin Poventud just under four minutes. Brunk led the match 13-3 after the first round, collecting three takedowns and a four-count nearfall. Brunk started the second round strong with another takedown that Poventud was able to escape. A takedown at 1:06 gave Brunk the technical fall with a score of 19-4. After three bouts, the Falcons led the team score 11-3.
Four Falcons earned the win in their respective weight classes via forfeit.
Levi Snyder (149 lbs.),
Clay Gainer (157 lbs.),
Keegan Demarest (165 lbs.), and
Austin Brass (174 lbs.) each picked up six team points, extending the Falcons lead to 35-3.
At 184 lbs.,
Tim Eddinger was defeated by Jayden Mora via fall at 1:54. The pair seemed to be evenly matched after Eddinger took a 6-0 lead with a takedown and nearfall. Mora picked up an escape, takedown and nearfall to tie the score 6-6 before earning the fall.
Sawyer Dereszynski earned a 16-1 technical fall in 2:33 over Andrew Szwedyk. The first minute was evenly matched before Dereszynski started his dominate effort with a takedown just under a minute in. He then picked up two nearfalls before Szwedyk was able to escape and set the score to 10-1 in favor of Dereszynski. Dereszynski then picked up a takedown and nearfall to bring the score to 16-1 and earn the technical fall victory.
The 285 lbs. bout featured
Micah Martinez against Luciano Mazzeo. Mazzeo earned an early takedown, but Martinez was able to counter with a reversal and nearfall to go up 6-3. Martinez earned the fall at 2:00, picking up six team points and securing Messiah's team victory with a score of 46-9.
Messiah University vs Muhlenberg College
Messiah took on host Muhlenberg College in their second dual of the day. The Falcons claimed a 32-13 team win over the Mules.
Bryce Arnold competed at 125 lbs. for the Falcons and was defeated via 8-3 decision by Joey Lamparelli. Lamparelli picked up two takedowns in the first round and Arnold picked up two escapes to give Lamparelli the 6-2 lead after round one. Arnold started the second round with an escape to move the score to 6-3. Lamparelli picked up an escape point and a riding time point to earn the 8-3 decision over Arnold.
At 133 lbs., CJ Horvath defeated
Mason Casey by a 17-6 major decision. Horvath took the 9-2 lead after round one with three takedowns to Casey's two escapes. Horvath added two takedowns in round two with Casey earning one escape point. Horvath earned one escape point before Casey picked up a late takedown. Horvath added a riding time point to take the bout 17-6 and putting the Mules up 7-0 in the team score.
Shaun Quirk took on Andrew Loniewski in the 141 lbs. weight class and picked up the Falcons first win with a 12-1 major decision. Quirk led 6-1 after the first round with two takedowns. A second period reversal grew Quirk's lead to 8-1 before a takedown and riding time gave him the 12-1 major decision and bringing the team score to 7-4 in favor of the Mules.
Dalton Monger started a stretch of wins for the Falcons with an 8-5 decision over Alex Greco at 149 lbs.. Monger took a quick 3-0 lead with a takedown in the first round. Greco picked up an escape point in the middle of the first to finish the round 3-1 in favor of Monger. An escape and takedown in the second round for Greco gave him a 5-3 lead. Monger escaped to end the second period down 5-4. An escape and takedown in the third round gave Monger the win and tied the team score 7-7 after four bouts.
Clay Gainer earned a commanding 17-0 technical fall over Charles Levine in the 157 lbs. weight class. Gainer led Levine 3-0 after a first-round takedown. In the second round, Gainer earned a takedown and two four-count nearfalls to lead 14-0. A takedown in the third round gave Gainer the 17-0 technical fall in 5:17 and added five points to the team score, giving Messiah a 12-7 lead.
Keegan Demarest earned a fall in 1:01 over Chris Sockler in the 165 lbs. weight class. Demarest led 6-1 after two takedowns in the first minute before earning the fall in 1:01 to give the Falcons a 18-7 team lead.
At 174 lbs.,
Austin Brass earned the 17-2 technical fall over Nick Stump. Brass led 13-2 after a strong first round with three takedowns and a four-count nearfall. Brass started down in the second period and earned the escape point before picking up a takedown to earn the technical fall in 4:10.
Ryder Slayton earned a 3-1 decision over Fletcher Goodman at 184 lbs. after a tightly contested bout. Slayton led 3-0 after a first-round takedown and Goodman picked up a stalling point in the second to bring the score to 3-1. Neither competitor was able to secure a point in the third and Slayton earned the 3-1 decision.
Paul Parise defeated
Sawyer Dereszynski at 197 lbs. via a fall at 5:59, earning his team six points and bringing the team score to 26-13 in favor of the Falcons. Parise took the lead 3-1 after a takedown in the first round with an escape by Dereszynski. Parise extended his lead to 8-1 after a second-round takedown and reversal. He added three additional points with a takedown before earning the fall at 5:59.
Finishing out the match was a battle between Ben Krauss and
Micah Martinez in the 285 lbs. weight class. Krauss picked up an early takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Martinez was able to escape and capitalize with a takedown of his own to take a 4-3 lead. Martinez then earned the fall at the 2:19 mark and Messiah earned their second team win of the day with a score of 32-13.
Messiah University vs Shenandoah University
The Falcons finished the day with a 43-7 victory over Shenandoah University to go 3-0 on the day at the Scotty Wood Duals.
Bryce Arnold was defeated at 125 lbs. by Anakin Burks via a 7-5 decision. Burks jumped to an early 6-1 lead after two takedowns in the first round. Arnold battled back with a takedown in the second, bringing the score to 7-4 in Burks' favor. A late stalling call in the third round gave Arnold another point but it was not enough, and Burks took the match 7-5.
Mason Casey picked up a first-round fall over Heath Burds under a minute into the bout. Casey picked up an early takedown before earning the fall at 0:56 to give Messiah the 6-3 advantage in the team score.
Asa Brunk continued a strong showing on the day with a 17-1 technical fall in the second round over Sean Rinebolt. Brunk picked up an early lead with a takedown and four-count nearfall that was followed by a second takedown late in the first round. The second round started with a 10-1 advantage in favor of Brunk who extended his lead with a takedown and a four-count nearfall that led to his technical fall at 4:33.
At 149 lbs.,
Levi Snyder earned a 20-4 technical fall over Hunter Ballantine at 5:20. Snyder picked up two takedowns in the first round and four in the second to go up 18-4 heading into the final period. An early reversal gave him the 20-4 technical fall and the Falcons team lead grew to 16-3.
Noah Rice earned a 15-7 major decision over Canon Long in the 157 lbs. weight class. The pair were tied 4-4 after the first period with each wrestler earning a takedown and an escape. Momentum shifted in Rice's favor in the second after an escape and takedown gave him an 8-4 lead. Long picked up an escape but Rice answered with another takedown to lead 11-5 with one period remaining. Rice added a takedown and riding time to his score in the third period and finished with the 15-7 win.
Keegan Demarest picked up his second fall of the day, defeating Brendan Orr in 2:06. Demarest earned a takedown just 15 seconds into the match that was followed by a quick escape by Orr. A takedown and four-count nearfall gave Demarest a 10-1 lead before earning the fall at 2:06. The next bout at 174 lbs. brought another short fall, with
Austin Brass earning the fall over Daiveon Barlow in 0:52. Brass had two takedowns before earning the fall. The Falcons continued their dominance with another fast bout in the 184 lbs. weight class.
Ryder Slayton picked up a takedown 17 seconds into the match before claiming three-straight four-count nearfalls to go up 17-0 and earn the technical fall in 1:17.
Sawyer Dereszynski picked up the victory at 197 lbs. via forfeit and the Falcons team lead grew to 43-3. In the final bout of the day for Messiah,
Micah Martinez was defeated by Rives Hargis via fall at 5:15. The pair had a competitive match prior to the fall, with Hargis leading 10-5 after the first round. Martinez picked up a reversal and takedown to keep himself in the match. Second round action began with an escape and takedown by Martinez to cut the deficit to 10-9. Hargis earned the reversal and two four-count nearfalls to regain the lead. Martinez again battled back with an escape and takedown to bring the score to 20-13 in favor of Hargis. Hargis picked up one more takedown in the third before earning the fall at 5:15. Hargis' efforts were not enough to change the team outcome, as the Falcons claimed their third win of the day, 43-7.
