GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University Wrestling team hosted their first dual meet of the season, welcoming the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University to Hitchcock Arena. The Falcons earned the team victory with a final score of 35-14.
Mason Casey earned the win at 133 lbs. via fall while
Levi Snyder and
Austin Brass earned technical falls at 149 lbs. and 174 lbs. respectively.
Messiah is next in action on Saturday, December 14, when they travel to Westminster, Md. to take on McDaniel College in a dual meet. Action is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
Exhibition Matches
Prior to the start of scored matches, two exhibition matches occurred. At 141 lbs., Dhilan Patel of Johns Hopkins defeated
Landen Pangborn via 9-6 decision. Noah O'Connor defeated
Drew Kozubal via 12-1 major decision.
Dual Action
At 125 lbs., Duncan Stadler made quick work on the mat and defeated
Austin Jeffrey via fall in 56 seconds. In the next bout at 133 lbs.,
Mason Casey earned an early takedown that was quickly countered by Andrew Mahony with an escape and takedown to go up 4-3 just 45 seconds into the match. Casey earned an escape with 2:00 remaining and takedown at 1:26 remaining to take the advantage 7-4. Casey maintained control and was able to capitalize on the situation and earn the fall at 2:07.
The 141 lbs. bout started with some back-and-forth action without any scoring before Giorgio Difalco took down
Asa Brunk with nine seconds remaining before earning three nearfall points to end the first period up 6-0. Brunk started the second period down and earned the escape just under a minute in. Scoring continued at the end of the second period, with Difalco again earning a takedown late as well as four nearfall points. Difalco picked up a takedown with 1:24 remaining in the third and finished with a technical fall, with a final score of 18-1.
Next on the mat was
Levi Snyder taking on Brennan McGrann at 149 lbs.. Action started early and set the tone for a high-scoring match. Snyder earned a takedown just 15 seconds into the match. Over the next minute and a half, McGrann escaped twice while Snyder picked up two other takedowns, setting the score to 9-2 in favor of Snyder after one period. McGrann selected to start bottom for the second round and Snyder opted to begin the round neutral, giving McGrann the escape point. With 1:20 remaining, Snyder earned a takedown that began a back-and-forth with Snyder takedowns and McGrann escapes that spanned a minute. In that minute, Snyder picked up four takedowns to McGrann's three escapes, giving Snyder the 21-6 technical fall with 21 seconds left in the second period.
Freddy Pimental defeated
Clay Gainer via an 8-6 decision at 157 lbs. after a closely contested bout. Pimental earned a takedown with 1:16 remaining in the first period. Gainer earned an escape before being taken down a second time and again earning the escape. Pimental held a 6-2 advantage heading into the second round. Gainer selected to start down in the second round and picked up a point with an early escape and the only scoring of the second period. Pimental selected down to start the third and earned the escape to take a 7-3 lead. With just under a minute remaining, Gainer earned the takedown to cut Pimental's lead to one. Pimental earned one more escape to win the match via 8-6 decision.
Keegan Demarest defeated Chris Roybal at 165 lbs. via 4-2 decision. The first period was low in action, with only a stall warning given to Roybal on the stat sheet. Roybal selected bottom to start the second round and earned the escape in eight seconds to take the 1-0 lead. With 15 seconds remaining, Roybal was called for stalling for the second time and the score was tied 1-1 after Demarest was awarded a point. At the start of the third period, Demarest opted to start down. Just 15 seconds in, Demarest earned the two-point reversal to go up 3-1. Demarest earned the 4-2 decision after gaining an extra point from riding time.
Austin Brass picked up a technical fall at 174 lbs. over Connor Powell. Brass picked up an early takedown that was followed by a Powell escape. Action went back-and-forth before Brass was able to pick up a second takedown with 42 seconds remaining in the first round. Brass deferred his choice and Powell opted to start the second round down. Brass maintained control for much of the match before Powell escaped with 1:21 remaining. Brass picked up a takedown with 29 seconds remaining to go into the third round leading 9-2. In the final seconds of the third period, Brass earned a takedown and four nearfall points to go up 16-2 to claim the technical fall. With a riding time point, Brass increased his technical fall score to 17-2.
In the final contested match of the night,
Ryder Slayton defeated Noah Graber via a 14-3 major decision. Slayton was the third Falcon of the day to earn a takedown 15 seconds into the first round. Graber was able to earn the escape with 1:18 remaining to bring the first period score to 3-1 in favor of Slayton. Graber started the second round down and earned the escape point 38 seconds in. Slayton earned the takedown with just over a minute remaining. Graber earned one more escape with Slayton earning one more takedown in the second to bring the score to 9-3 with one period remaining. Slayton chose to start down for the final period and earned an early escape. With 29 seconds remaining, Slayton picked up a takedown to go up 13-3. At the conclusion of the match, Slayton was awarded a riding time point, and warned the 14-3 major decision.
At 197 lbs.,
Sawyer Dereszynski defeated Kadin Khalloufi via forfeit.
Micah Martinez earned the victory at 285 lbs. via forfeit.
