Falcons Find Sweet Success at Chocolate Duals

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah Wrestling team hosted seven teams on Saturday, Dec. 21 for the 2024 Chocolate Duals. Messiah collected three falls, four technical falls, and three forfeits en route to a 55-0 team victory over Randolph. The Falcons collected five falls, three technical falls, and one forfeit en route to a 51-6 team victory over Union County. Messiah earned one fall and three decisions in a 19-15 loss to Ithaca.

Up next, Messiah will travel to Williamsport, Pa. to compete at the Bud Whitehill National Division III Duals hosted by Lycoming.

Messiah University Falcons vs Randolph College Wildcats
Messiah collected three falls, four technical falls, and three forfeits en route to a 55-0 team victory over Randolph.
Bryce Arnold started the Falcons off strong at 125 lbs. vs Justin Porter. After a takedown for Porter in the first minute, Arnold earned the escape and never looked back. Arnold secured a takedown and nearfall points to shift momentum in his favor with a score of 6-4. In the second period, Arnold maintained control with another takedown and nearfall count before earning the fall in 4:15.

At 133 lbs., Mason Casey dominated Zakariya Gurban, earning an 18-0 technical fall in 4:03. Casey was off to a quick lead with a takedown and two four-count nearfalls in the first period to lead 11-0. In the second period, Casey earned another takedown and four-count nearfall to claim the bout via an 18-0 technical fall.

Asa Brunk earned the technical fall at 141 lbs., defeating Noah Williams by a score of 19-3. Brunk got his first takedown just six seconds into the match. In the next 15 seconds, Williams escaped, Brunk earned another takedown, and Williams had a second escape to bring the score to 6-2. Brunk then secured a takedown and four-count nearfall before and escape by Williams. A late takedown in the first round brought the score to 16-3 in favor of Brunk heading to the second period. Brunk only needed 20 seconds in the second period to earn a takedown and secure the technical fall with a score of 19-3 in 3:20.

Levi Snyder earned the fall at 149 lbs. over Jordan Nutter. Snyder collected a quick takedown and four-count nearfall. Nutter escaped at the 2:32 mark and over the next minute, Snyder would collect three takedowns to claim the 16-3 lead. Snyder make quick work after the last takedown, staying in control of Nutter and earning the fall in 1:39.

At 157 lbs., Clay Gainer won via forfeit.

In the Falcons longest bout of the dual, Keegan Demarest earned the 21-6 technical fall over Theodore Piluso in 5:59. Demarest was the first to score, earning a takedown at 2:21 of the first period. Action then went back-and-forth, with both wrestlers earning a takedown and setting the score to 7-5 in favor of Demarest heading to the second period. Demarest claimed the only points of the second round with a four-count nearfall to extend his lead to 11-5 with one period remaining. He started the third round strong with a takedown. After a Piluso escape, Demarest earned a takedown and four-count nearfall to secure the 21-6 technical fall.

At 174 lbs., Austin Brass won via forfeit.

At 184 lbs., Ryder Slayton won via forfeit.

Sawyer Dereszynski earned a commanding victory at 197 lbs., defeating Harriss Sullivan via technical fall in just 1:38. Dereszynski earned a takedown only five seconds into the bout. Following a Sullivan escape, Dereszynski picked up a takedown and four-count nearfall. A second Sullivan escape led to Dereszynski earning his third takedown and another four-count nearfall to secure the 17-2 technical fall.
It was again a short bout for the Falcons as Micah Martinez earned the fall over Joshua Spivey in just under two minutes. Martinez had a takedown 23 seconds in before Spivey escaped. A second takedown at 1:48 allowed Martinez to flip Spivey quickly to earn the fall at 1:44.

Messiah University Falcons vs Union County College Owls
The Falcons collected five falls, three technical falls, and one forfeit en route to a 51-6 team victory over Union County.

At 125 lbs., Bryce Arnold won via forfeit.

Mason Casey earned the 17-0 technical fall over Salvatore Randazzo at 133 lbs. in 6:41. Casey held a 7-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and four-count nearfall. He doubled his lead with identical stats in the second period to lead 14-0 with one period remaining. Casey picked up a takedown with 19 seconds remaining in the match to claim the 17-0 technical fall.

Shaun Quirk was in action for Messiah at 141 lbs. against Joshua Baeza. Quirk earned two first period takedowns before earning the fall in 1:54.

At 149 lbs., Dalton Monger claimed a fall in 1:43 over Braulio Villafana Jr.. Monger earned a takedown 11 seconds into the bout and maintained control before claiming the fall.

Clay Gainer defeated Louis Mustillo via a 20-3 technical fall in first period action at 157 lbs.. Gainer started his scoring with a takedown at the 2:25 mark that Mustillo quickly escaped from. He picked up a second takedown quickly after. Following a second Mustillo escape, Gainer scored seven points with a takedown and four-count nearfall before Mustillo made his third escape. With less than a minute remaining, Gainer secured his fourth takedown of the round followed by a four-count nearfall to earn the 20-3 technical fall.

Keegan Demarest was in action at 165 lbs. against Chris Gomez. Demarest earned a takedown 30 seconds in, which Gomez quickly escaped from. At 1:10, Demarest was able to earn a second takedown and capitalize on his position to flip Gomez and claim the fall at 2:33.

At 174 lbs., Austin Brass earned the 17-2 technical fall over Vito Giannetta. Brass earned his first takedown at 2:31. Following a Giannetta escape, Brass earned a second takedown followed by two four-count nearfalls. A Gianetta escape was quickly followed by a Brass takedown to secure the 17-2 technical fall in 2:43.

Tim Eddinger claimed a fall in 1:57 at 184 lbs. over Christian Matos. Eddinger earned a takedown just 14 seconds in and followed it with a four-count nearfall. He maintained control of the match and claimed the fall at 1:57.

Sawyer Dereszynski had a first minute fall at 197 lbs. over David Quintanilla. He picked up a takedown at the 2:28 mark and worked to flip Quinanilla looking for the pin. The ref took to counting for the nearfall but Dereszynski was able to get the second shoulder down to earn the fall in 0:56.

At 285 lbs., Brian Moyer Jr. defeated Nathan Manarin via a fall in 2:35. Manarin was the first to score with a takedown at 2:02. Manarin maintained control but Moyer made a nice reversal with 59 seconds remaining and was able to flip Manarin. Efforts to keep his second should up were not successful and Moyer Jr. claimed the win.

Messiah University Falcons vs Ithaca College Bombers
Messiah earned one fall and three decisions in a 19-15 loss to Ithaca.

At 125 lbs., Bryce Arnold defeated Cosmo Damiani via an 11-5 decision. Damiani was quick to strike with a takedown only eight seconds in. Arnold was able to escape and earn a takedown of his own with a little over a minute remaining in the first period. Damiana was able to escape to tie the score 4-4 heading into the second period. Arnold chose bottom to start the second round and quickly earned the escape and followed it with a takedown. Arnold picked up another takedown with 35 seconds left in the second period to go up 11-5.

Mason Casey and Tomah Gummow looked to be evenly matched in the first round of the 133 lbs. bout, but it would be Gummow who earned the 12-6 decision over Casey. Gummow had a takedown in the opening period and Casey worked to earn the reversal to bring the score to 3-2. Casey chose to start down for the second period and tied the score with an escape at 1:28. His escape following a Gummow takedown left him down 6-4 with one period remaining. Gummow used two takedowns to secure his 12-6 win.

At 141 lbs., Isaias Torres defeated Shaun Quirk via a 9-4 decision. After a scoreless first period, Quirk was first on the board after choosing to start down and earning the escape. Torres was quick to earn two takedown and take the lead 6-3 with one period remaining. He added one more takedown in the third to secure the 9-4 win.

In the 149 lbs. bout, Levi Snyder and Wenchard Pierre-Louis battles back and forth with Pierre-Louis able to claim the win. Pierre-Louis led 6-1 after the first period and Snyder was able to earn a takedown in the second round to bring the score to 7-4 in favor of Pierre-Louis with one period remaining. Snyder was able to earn an escape point, but it was not enough as he fell via 7-5 decision.

Clay Gainer earned the win at 157 lbs. with a 4-1 decision over Brian Bienus. Gainer earned a takedown in the opening period and lead 3-0 after one period. He chose to start bottom and claimed an escape point during the second round. During the third round, Bienus chose to start down and claimed a point for an escape, but Gainer claimed the 4-1 bout victory.

At 165 lbs., Konrad Parker defeated Keegan Demarest via a 7-4 decision. Parker claimed the early 6-2 lead with two takedowns in the first period to Demarest's two escapes. Parker started bottom for round two and quickly escaped to bring his lead to 7-2. In the final period, Demarest earned a penalty point and an escape, but it was not enough, and he dropped the bout 7-4.

Jackson Gray defeated Austin Brass at 174 lbs. via 4-1 decision. After a scoreless first period, Gray chose to start bottom and earned a quick escape point to start the second period. He was able to earn a takedown and take the 4-0 lead with one period remaining. Brass started down for the third round and earned an escape but was unable to put together a takedown and dropped the bout 4-1.

Ryder Slayton earned the win at 184 lbs. with a 10-5 decision over Xavier Pommells. Slayton jumped to a 7-0 lead after a takedown and four-count nearfall in the first period. He picked up two escapes in the second to lead 9-3 with one period remaining. The third period was littered with penalties on both sides, but Slayton came away with the 10-5 victory.

At 197 lbs., Sawyer Dereszynski was defeated by Ryan Galka via 10-2 major decision. After two periods, the score was 3-2 in favor of Galka. Galka used a reversal and nearfall to increase his lead and secured the 10-2 victory with a riding time point.

In the final bout of the day, Micah Martinez earned the victory at 285 lbs. with a fall over Charlie Turner. Turner took the lead with a takedown at 1:34 that was quickly countered with a Martinez reversal. Martinez quickly capitalized and secured the fall at 1:36.
