ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah University men's soccer team defeated the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, 4-0, in the annual Marshmallow Bowl game. The Falcons got off to a strong start with a goal from
Sam Phillips in the 10th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons continued on the attack and
Josh Bratager scored a goal from Phillips to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute. Right before the half, the Falcons added another goal, this time by
Matt Griffin from
Jarec Morlote to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the break.
Jarec Morlote scored the final tally in the 52nd minute from
Jordan Gilman to put the final score at 4-0.
Up next, the Falcons return to Shoemaker Field to take on the Lions of Penn St. Harrisburg on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
First Half
After an
Adam Carter save in the second minute, the Falcons offense got to work.
Jarec Morlote drilled a shot, but it was saved by the Blue Jays goalkeeper. The Falcons offense continued pressure and
Sam Phillips stole a pass from a Blue Jay defense and sent a shot into the bottom-right corner of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. The Falcons continued the offensive pressure and added to their one-goal lead in the 25th minute.
Josh Bratager tapped the ball into the bottom-right of the goal off a
Sam Phillips' cross to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The Falcons offensive barrage when
Jarec Morlote sent a free kick into the box and
Matt Griffin headed the ball into the goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Second Half
The Falcons offense continued the offensive attack into the beginning of the second half.
Jordan Gilman sent a ball into the box to
Jarec Morlote and Morlote beat a Blue Jay defender and sent the ball into the top-left of the goal to push the Falcons lead to 4-0. The Falcons added two more chances on
Sam Phillips and
Kyle Spodnik shots, but both were saved by the Blue Jays' goalkeeper to keep the score 4-0.

Jarec Morlote led the Falcons with a goal and an assist each.
Matt Griffin and
Josh Bratager each added a goal.
Jordan Gilman also tallied an assist. The Falcons totaled 11 shots with seven shots on goal. The Blue Jays totaled 14 shots with three shots on goal. Messiah earned five corner kicks to Elizabethtown's two.
Adam Carter earned the shutout with three saves.
