Women’s Swim Downs Spartans in Season Opener

GRANTHAM, Pa. – On Friday evening, the Messiah University women's swimming defeated the Spartans of York College, 143-100. The Falcons finished with two relay wins in the opening and final race of the meet. The Falcons earned 20 top three finishes on the evening with four gold medals. Grace Schad led the Falcons with two first-place finishes. Keelie Conaway and Lauren Edge each touched the wall first in a race.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Dallas, Pa. for a dual against the Cougars of Misericordia University on Friday, Oct. 24 at 5:00 p.m.

How It Happened
The Falcons opened the meet strong with a first and third place finish in the 200 medley relay. Grace Schad, Madelyn Frey, Rachel Sobkowiak, and Lauren Edge earned the gold with a time of 1:52. 75. The team of Maddy Price, Makayla Yellets, Abby Caltrider, and Kylie Wilkinson finished in third with a time of 2:01.14.
 
Messiah opened the individual races strong with a second and third place finish in the 200 free. Kari Mindrebo finished in second with a time of 2:02.17 and Lauren Edge finished in third with a time of 2:02.30. Mindrebo added a pair of second-place finishes in other races with a time of 26.42 in the 50 free and a time of 56.86 in the 100 free. Edge added a gold medal in the 500 free with a time of 5:26.68.
 
In the 100 back, the Falcons swept the Spartans earning all three top spots. Grace Schad finished with the gold with a time of 1:01.56, Meredith Westcott touched the wall in second with a time of 1:07.00, and Maddy Price earned third place with a time of 1:07.10. The three swept the 200 back later in the meet with Schad finishing in first with a time of 2:16.78, Westcott earning the silver with a time of 2:21.26, and Price touching the wall third with a time of 2:26.49.
 
In the next race, Madelyn Frey earned the silver in the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.71. Frey added another second-place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:232.45.
 
The Falcons swept another race with a first, second, and third place finish in the 200 fly. Keelie Conaway earned the gold with a time of 2:32.00, Makayla Yellets finished in second with a time of 2:35.16, and Abby Caltrider touched the wall third with a time of 2:38.66. Conaway added a third-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:49.14 and Caltrider added a bronze in the 100 fly with a time of 1:07.98.
 
Rachel Sobkowiak added a third-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 26.69. Sobkowiak also finished in second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.89.
 
The Falcons capped off the individual races with a third-place finish from Samantha Pennell in the 400 IM with a time of 5:18.76.
 
The Falcons closed the meet with a first and third-place finish in the 200 free relay. The team of Lauren Edge, Kari Mindrebo, Madelyn Frey, and Grace Schad finished in first with a time of 1:42.41. The team of Kendal Wilson, Maddy Price, Abby Caltrider, and Kylie Wilkinson touched the wall third with a time of 1:50.51.
