OWINGS MILLS, Md. – On Saturday afternoon, the Messiah University men's soccer team used a first half goal from
Kyle Spodnik and shutdown defense throughout the game to earn a 1-0 win over the Mustangs of Stevenson University. After putting a pair of shots on goal early, the Falcons broke through on the scoreboard in the 30th minute on a
Kyle Spodnik goal from
Sam Phillips. The Falcons totaled two shots on goal in the second half but did not allow a shot on goal all game and Messiah earned the 1-0 win.
Up next, the Falcons travel to York, Pa. to take on the Spartans of York College on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
First Half
The Falcons started the game with shots on goal from
Davis Pagett and
Sam Phillips, but each shot was saved, and the game remained scoreless in the 13th minute. After some back-and-forth play, the Falcons looked to break the tie in the 30th minute. The play started with a long ball from
Matt Griffin towards the left corner to
Sam Phillips. Phillips dribbled the ball and sent a cross right in front of the goal.
Kyle Spodnik jumped up and deflected the ball off his foot and into the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Neither team got a shot on goal the rest of the half and the Falcons took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Second Half
The Falcons controlled possession for most of the second half and added shots on goal from
Elijah Perry and
Kyle Spodnik but could not add to their lead. The Falcons defense shut down the Stevenson attack, allowing no shots on goal throughout the entire game to give the Falcons the 1-0 win.

Sam Phillips tallied an assist. The Falcons totaled 15 shots with five shots on goal. The Mustangs tallied six shots with no shots on goal. The Falcons earned eight corner kicks to the Mustangs' three.
Kessler Forrest earned the win in goal for the Falcons.
