Second-Half Surge Propels Men’s Soccer to Sweet Sixteen

GENEVA, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Messiah University men's soccer used a three-goal second half to defeat the Knights of Calvin University, 3-0 to advance to NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. The Falcons controlled most of the possession and sent three shots on goal but could not find the back of the net and score remained tied at zero at the break. Before the break, because of weather the game was delayed almost two hours. The Falcons came out of the break strong with a goal from Patrick Lee by Davis Pagett to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. Just two minutes later, Sam Phillips scored a goal to extend the Falcons lead to 2-0. The Falcons added another goal in the 61st minute from Pagett by Phillips to give the Falcons the 3-0 win and a trip to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.

First Half
The Falcons looked to get on the board early with a shot on goal from Jalen Keller and Patrick Lee, but each shot was saved to keep the game scoreless in the second minute. The Knights got their first chance on goal in the 12th minute, but Kessler Forrest made the save to keep the game tied. The Falcons next chance in the 21st minute, with the second shot on goal from Lee, but the shot was saved to keep the Falcons off the board. In the 40th minute, there was an almost two-hour weather delay, stopping play. Neither team got a shot in the rest of the first half after play resumed and the game remained scoreless at the break.
 
Second Half
The Falcons came out of the break strong with two quick shots from Jalen Keller, but each shot was saved and the game remained tied in the 50th minute. The Falcons looked to break onto the scoreboard in the 55th minute. Patrick Lee got a pass from Davis Pagett near the top of the box and Lee ripped a shot into the bottom-left corner to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons looked to quickly add to their lead in the 55th minute. Sam Phillips got a breakaway opportunity of the left side of the field and drilled a sharp angle shot, past the sliding Knights' goalkeeper, and into the back of the goal to push the Falcons lead to two. The Falcons flurry continued in the 61st minute. Sam Phillips pushed the ball through the midfield and into the offensive third and slotted a pass just inside the right side of the box to Davis Pagett. Pagett ripped a one-timer into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. The Knights had three chances to score a goal in the rest of the second half, but Kessler Forrest made two saves, and the Falcons got a team save to earn the 3-0 win and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
 
Stats
Davis Pagett and Sam Phillips led the Falcons with a goal and an assist each. Patrick Lee scored the game-winner for the Falcons in the 55th minute. The Falcons totaled 21 shots with eight shots on goal. The Knights tallied nine shots with four shots on goal. The Knights earned all eight corner kicks in the game. Kessler Forrest earned the shutout win and made three saves.
