Men’s Soccer Travels to Tufts for Sectional Weekend

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Messiah University men's soccer team heads to Tufts University for the Sectional Weekend of the DIII Men's Soccer NCAA Tournament. The Falcons take on the top-ranked Jumbos of Tufts University on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11:00 a.m. Connecticut College and Bowdoin play in the other sectional semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. The winners of each game will play on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 1:00 p.m. for a trip to the Final Four.

For games at Tufts this weekend ticket prices are: Adults $15, Seniors (65+), Students and Children (3-12) $10, Children under three years, free. Tickets are available on sight and can be purchased with cash or credit card.


Messiah University Falcons

13-7-2 Overall Record, MAC Commonwealth Champions

The Falcons enter the Sectional Weekend with a 13-7-2 overall record. The Falcons opened the season with an 0-5 record. The Falcons then went 3-2-2 over the next seven games. The Falcons then caught fire in conference play, running the table with right straight wins to win the MAC Commonwealth Tournament, 2-0 over Stevenson, to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Falcons opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over No. 16 Hobart College. Patrick Lee scored the game-winner in overtime to advance the Falcons into the second round. Even with a long weather delay in the second round, the Falcons cruised to a 3-0 win over Calvin to earn the trip to the Sweet Sixteen. Patrick Lee, Sam Phillips, and Davis Pagett each scored in the second half.
 
The Falcons this season totaled 40 goals, while surrendering 26 goals. The Falcons offense produced many chances, ranking 22nd in the country in shots per game (18.32) and seventeenth in corner kicks per game (6.91). The Falcons' defense has been the strength of the team during the current 10-game winning streak. The Falcons have allowed only one goal during the stretch and rank ninth in the country with a .591 shutout percentage on the season.

No. 1 Tufts University Jumbos

16-1-3 Overall Record, NESCAC Champions

The Jumbos enter the Sectional Weekend with a 16-1-3 overall record. The Jumbos started the season with a 5-1-2 record, with the only coming against Williams in just the second game of the season. The Jumbos entered the tournament with a 9-0-1 record in their final 10 games including a 1-0 win over Connecticut College in the NESCAC Championship game. The Jumbos this season are 10-1-1 at home this season.
 
The Jumbos cruised to a 5-0 win over Penn St. Harrisburg in the opening round. The Jumbos were led by Bijan Akhtarzandi-Das, who scored two goals for the Jumbos in the win. In the second round, the Jumbos and No. Brandeis battled for 101 minutes before Henry Brown scored the game-winner for Tufts in the second overtime to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

The Jumbos enter the Sectional Weekend as one of the top overall units in the country. The Jumbos defense ranks second in the country with a .700 shutout percentage and fourth with a .446 goals-against average. The Jumbos offense ranks 39th in total points (136), 47th in goals (47), 32 in assists (42), and 36th in points per game (6.80). The Jumbos offense creates many chances ranking 22nd in the country with 6.80 corner kicks per game and 30th with 17.60 shots per game.

History Against Messiah
The Falcons and Jumbos have met only once in program history. Tufts and Messiah met in the NCAA Tournament Sectional Final in 2014, and the Jumbos defeated the Falcons, 1-0.

 

No. 7 Connecticut College Camels

12-3-5 Overall Record, At-Large, NESCAC

The Camels enter the Sectional Weekend with a 12-3-5 overall record. The Camels opened the first half of the regular season with a 3-2-3 record with a win over then top ten ranked Middlebury. The Camels finished the regular season strong with a 5-0-2 record before competing in the NESCAC Tournament. The Camels defeated No. 19 Williams and No. 11 Wesleyan before falling to No. 1 Tufts in the NESCAC Championship game.
 
The Camels earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and defeated the University of Saint Joseph, 6-0 in the first round. The Camels scored five second half goals to earn the win and head to the Second Round. The Camels then defeated Babson, 2-1 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Marco Perugini scored the game-winner for the Camels on a penalty kick in the 81st minute.
 
The Camels enter the Sectional Weekend as one of the top ranked defenses in the country. The Camels rank 20th in the country with a .653 goals-against average and 24th in the country with a .500 shutout percentage. The Camels offense has totaled 94 points and 32 goals scored on the season.

No. 9 Bowdoin College Polar Bears

12-3-3 Overall Record, At-Large, NESCAC


The Polar Bears enter the Sectional Weekend with a 12-3-3 overall record. The Polar Bears opened the season with a 4-2-2 record in their first eight games, The Polar Bears finished the regular season strong with a 6-0-1 record in their final seven games, including wins over three ranked opponents. The Camels fell to Middlebury in the NESCAC Quarterfinals, but with a high NPI ranking, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Polar Bears opened the NCAA Tournament with a 7-2 win over Lyon College. Adam Prince scored a hat-trick to lead Bowdoin. The Polar Bears then defeated UMass Boston, 3-2 in the Second Round to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. UMass Boston opened the scoring, but the Polar Bears scored three-straight goals to earn the win.
 
The Polar Bears rank as one of the top defensive teams in the country. Bowdoin ranks 16th in the country with a .556 shutout percentage and 35th with a .778 goals-against average. The Polar Bears offense ranks 78th in points (115), 84th in goals (40), 59th in assists (35), and 59th in points per game (6.39).
